Global Silicon Wafer Shipments Surge 10% Year-on-Year in Q2 2025
The latest report from the SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) highlights a significant uptick in silicon wafer shipments, revealing a year-on-year increase of 9.6% in Q2 2025. This surge has brought the total to approximately 3,327 million square inches (MSI), up from 3,035 MSI in the same quarter last year. Sequentially, there's also a substantial quarter-over-quarter growth of 14.9% from the initial quarter of 2025, when shipments stood at 2,896 MSI.
According to Lee Chungwei, the Chairman of SEMI SMG and Vice President at GlobalWafers, the demand for silicon wafers is greatly spurred by the requirements of artificial intelligence (AI) data-center chips, notably high-bandwidth memory (HBM). This growing demand indicates resilience in certain sectors, particularly as companies pivot from memory-focused technologies to broader applications.
While the trajectory of silicon shipments presents a positive outlook, challenges still loom. Lee notes that even though there are signs of recovery, fab utilization for various devices remains low, reflecting a cautious market environment. However, inventory levels are beginning to stabilize, suggesting a potential normalization in the supply chain.
