STL's Commitment to a Sustainable Future

The company's ambitious journey aims to reduce carbon emissions dramatically while enhancing its eco-friendly product portfolio by switching to 100% Green Power.

Transition to 100% Green Power



In a bold move, STL is shifting its electricity sourcing from traditional fossil fuels to renewable sources, primarily wind and solar. This transition encompasses all four of its manufacturing facilities located in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra. Partnering with the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), STL aims for a substantial 65% reduction in scope 2 emissions associated with its optical fiber (OFC) plants.

Emphasizing Green Hydrogen in Manufacturing



One of the most noteworthy aspects of STL's commitment to decarbonisation is the integration of 100% Green Hydrogen into its glass manufacturing processes. This step is critical as the production of optical fibers traditionally relied on hydrogen and oxygen produced through conventional methods, which substantially increased their carbon footprint. By switching to green hydrogen, STL is taking a significant step towards decarbonizing this energy-intensive segment of the optical fiber production process.

Life Cycle Assessment and Eco-labeling



STL's sustainability efforts extend beyond energy sourcing. The company is actively involved in evaluating the life cycle of its optical products, offering a range of Eco-labelled Certified Optical Products. These efforts demonstrate a responsible approach toward reducing the environmental impact of its offerings.

Enhanced Corporate Mobility Policy



In addition to its manufacturing transitions, STL has updated its corporate mobility policy to promote the use of low carbon-emission vehicles among its employees. The new Company Car Policy includes enhanced incentives for employees choosing electric or hybrid vehicles, emphasizing STL's commitment to reducing its operational carbon footprint.

Benefits for Customers and the Environment



These initiatives signal an essential part of STL's broader strategy aimed at sustainability. One notable achievement is the reduction in the carbon footprint of STL's G.657.A2 optical fiber, commonly used in Data Centers and telecom networks. This fiber's footprint has been slashed from 4.7 kg CO₂e per fiber kilometer to just 0.9 kg CO₂e/fkm, marking an impressive 80% reduction.
