Singapore and Malaysia Lead in ASEAN Education Rankings
In the latest
AppliedEdu University Rankings 2027, the National University of Singapore (NUS) has proudly retained its title as the top public university in ASEAN for the third consecutive year. Meanwhile, Sunway University continues its impressive run, staying at the forefront of private university rankings for the fourth year in a row. This recognition emphasizes the commitment both institutions have to providing quality education and fostering successful careers for their graduates.
The rankings provide an extensive evaluation of higher education across Southeast Asia, with a total of
316 universities from nine ASEAN countries being assessed—an increase from 237 in the previous year. This year’s rankings are based on over 100,000 validated student responses, peer nominations from academic professionals, and verified institutional data, making this edition the most thorough in AppliedEdu's history.
Key Highlights of the Rankings
Malaysia shines in the results, claiming a noteworthy achievement by securing seven positions in the top ten private universities and five in the top ten public universities. Overall, the country boasts
21 private and
16 public universities in the top 50, demonstrating a robust educational landscape.
Mandy Mok, the founder and CEO of AppliedEdu, underscores the essential role of rankings, asserting that they should inspire educational improvements rather than merely acknowledge successes. "Rankings should do more than recognise achievement; they should help universities build on their strengths and make informed decisions that lead to better student outcomes and communal benefits,” she stated.
Insights on the Ranking System
The
AppliedEdu rankings place significant emphasis on teaching and learning, which comprises
40% of the total assessment. For private universities, employability is weighted at
20%, while it stands at
15% for public universities. This collective focus on education quality and graduate outcomes constitutes a major portion of the final scores.
In addition to teaching efficacy and employability, the rankings consider elements like research output, institutional reputation, community involvement, and internationalization—acknowledging the broader impact universities have on society and their contributions to student development.
