Bridgestone and Penske Team Up to Reduce CO₂ Emissions with Innovative Solutions
Bridgestone and Penske Reduce CO₂ Emissions
Bridgestone Americas and Penske Transportation Solutions recently revealed the encouraging findings from the initial phase of their collaborative initiative known as the Decarbonization Lab. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, this lab was established to pinpoint and confirm viable solutions that can effectively decrease CO₂ emissions for commercial fleets under authentic operational circumstances. The findings mark a significant step towards sustainability in the transportation sector.
Journey into Sustainability
For over a decade, Bridgestone and Penske have partnered on various projects, from high-stakes IndyCar racing to implementing millions of retreaded tires throughout the Penske fleet. Their latest venture highlights the commitment to sustainability and innovation that both companies share. Erik Seidel, Bridgestone's Head of Sustainability for the Americas, emphasized the lab's significance, describing it as a beacon showcasing how meaningful sustainable changes can be made through collaboration.
Key Elements Tested
The Decarbonization Lab tested three critical components that can enhance fleet performance: tire and retread efficiency, the implementation of renewable diesel, and route optimization strategies designed to enhance logistics. Each element was evaluated in cooperation with advanced data analytics provider Dynamon, generating robust results from more than 500,000 fleet miles traveled during the first phase of testing.
Tire and Retread Performance
A standout finding was the impressive improvement of 6.35% in miles per gallon (mpg) achieved by deploying low-rolling-resistance retreads alongside the IntelliTire™ pressure monitoring system and Bridgestone tire casings on Penske trucks. This advancement not only underscores the importance of tire innovations in achieving higher fuel efficiency but also demonstrates the potential for significant operational cost savings.
Exploring Renewable Diesel
With prior research already outlining the emissions reduction benefits of using renewable diesel, the next step for the teams was to evaluate the viability of implementing this alternative fuel in Tennessee—a location that lies outside the jurisdiction of Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) states like California and Oregon. This aspect of the study focused on assessing the long-term maintenance and performance impacts of utilizing renewable diesel within the Penske fleet, providing crucial insights for future scalability.
Optimization of Logistics
Equally noteworthy was the collaboration between the logistics and engineering teams from Penske and Bridgestone aimed at optimizing the distribution network for Bridgestone’s automotive tire retail operations. Early calculations estimate a reduction of approximately 152,000 miles in transportation logistics, which if replicated across the Penske-Bridgestone fleet could lead to a decrease in CO₂ emissions by 4-6%. This illustrates how logistical efficiency can play a crucial role in minimizing environmental impact while enhancing operational effectiveness.
Industry Collaboration Is Key
Bill Combs, Senior Vice President of Partnership Sustainability Strategy at Penske, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "We are honored to work alongside Bridgestone to bring the Decarbonization Lab's findings to fruition. Together, we aim to uncover effective solutions that directly benefit our customers and the broader industry."
The Decarbonization Lab stands as a clear message to the industry: decarbonization is a complex challenge that requires collective efforts. No single organization can tackle this issue alone, thereby reinforcing the importance of such partnerships in advancing sustainability initiatives.
Looking Ahead
Leaders from both Bridgestone and Penske plan to discuss these transformative results at the upcoming ACT Expo 2026 in Las Vegas on May 4, shedding light on their plans for a second phase of the Decarbonization Lab in 2026. The next phase aims to refine their methodologies and test additional strategies, keeping the momentum towards greener solutions alive.
Bridgestone Americas has long been recognized as a global leader in tire and rubber manufacturing, dedicated to safe and sustainable mobility solutions. Penske Transportation Solutions represents a broader approach to logistics and sustainability, providing innovative transportation and technology solutions. The collaboration between these two companies exemplifies how industry leaders can join forces to pioneer paths toward a more sustainable future in transportation.
