Japan Platform Expands Support for Typhoon and Earthquake Victims in Cebu Island, Philippines



On September 30, 2025, a powerful earthquake registering 6.9 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Cebu Island, resulting in significant destruction. The hardest-hit area, Talisay City, is adjacent to Cebu City, where numerous homes were leveled and debris remains piled high. In light of these ongoing challenges, the international NGO Japan Platform (JPF) has announced an expansion of its relief efforts for victims of the dual crises of earthquake and subsequent typhoons that have plagued the region.

By November 4, Typhoon Tino made landfall in central Philippines, further exacerbating the situation with a devastating impact. Only a few days later, Typhoon Fung-wong followed suit, leading to enormous damage across Cebu Island and surrounding areas. As of mid-November, reports indicated that approximately 5.45 million people were affected by Typhoon Tino alone, with 271,299 forced to evacuate and a tragic toll of 253 lives lost alongside 119 individuals still unaccounted for. The subsequent Typhoon Fung-wong impacted an additional 7.52 million, with 421,740 individuals currently displaced.

In response, President Marcos declared a national state of calamity on November 6, recognizing the widespread devastation caused by Typhoon Tino and the impending threat posed by Typhoon Fung-wong. This declaration underscores the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in affected regions.

Prior to the typhoons, Japan Platform had initiated relief activities focused on supporting those displaced by the earthquake. Now, with the escalation of weather-related disasters, JPF is broadening its aid program under the new title,
