Upcoming Pop-up Oyster Event at Ryogoku Station
Starting from February 28, 2026, a unique event titled “Kaki Bugyo” will take place right in front of the JR Ryogoku Station, transforming the area into a lively port town atmosphere. This pop-up oyster booth will run until April 19, 2026, featuring an exciting self-BBQ style where visitors can grill and enjoy delicious oysters. This initiative aims to support areas affected by disasters, emphasizing community recovery and engagement through food.
The event has a special significance, originally founded to aid oyster farmers in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, who suffered economic hardship following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The “Kaki Bugyo Executive Committee,” which operates this project, continues to provide support to the disaster-stricken regions by promoting local seafood and invigorating the community.
A Tasty Mission with a Purpose
Each weekend, attendees can indulge in a comparison of a variety of oysters, with the spotlight on the sweet and creamy “Noto oysters” this year. Visitors will have the chance to savor oysters from various regions, including Ishinomaki, Iwate, and Setouchi, making it an excellent opportunity for those looking to enjoy the diverse flavors of Japanese oysters while supporting recovery efforts. Not only does this event provide the delicious experience of BBQ, but it also creates a fun and engaging atmosphere for families and friends, encouraging community bonding around a shared love for seafood.
Three Highlights of the Kaki Bugyo Event
1.
Experience Self-BBQ: Inside the special tent, immerse yourself in the ambiance reminiscent of a fishing port, where you can hear the crackling of charcoal and smell the briny aroma of the sea. Gather around the grill with loved ones and enjoy grilling your own seafood. With 40 tables available, there's a warm and inviting setup perfect for winter outings.
2.
Tasting Local Oysters: The main offering, the Ishinomaki raw oysters (1 serving of 4-6 pieces for 880 yen), is at a recovery support price. Besides, the delectable Noto and the meaty Setouchi oysters are available for comparison, making this event ideal for both casual dates and lively group gatherings. The “Oyster Bucket Challenge” is a must-try for passionate seafood fans, with a 30-second limit to grab as many oysters as possible!
3.
Family Friendly Environment: This event is designed to be enjoyable for everyone, including families with children. In addition to oyster dishes, a variety of kid-friendly menus featuring options like hotdogs and fried potatoes are available. With the weatherproof tents provided, families can relish their meals worry-free, regardless of the conditions outside.
Operating hours will be from 11 AM to 9 PM on weekends, and, depending on availability, they will close early when oysters run out. The nominal seating fee of 390 yen applies for each visitor, but it’s free for preschoolers. It’s a fantastic opportunity for families and friends to come together, enjoy good food, and actively participate in supporting local communities.
