Exploring the Stories Behind Japan's Lighthouses in 'Umimachi Traveler'

Discovering Japan's Coastal Lighthouses

In a captivating new program titled 'Umimachi Traveler', popular personalities Kaz Laser and Olin embark on an intellectual journey that connects over 3,000 lighthouses across Japan. This unique variety show delves into the intriguing relationship between the sea and the communities living alongside it. The program features two distinct travel routes: the Miura Peninsula, exploring the question, "What is it about the sea that captivates us?" and the Noto Peninsula, which seeks to understand, "Why does gazing upon the sea bring us peace?" Through these explorations, viewers gain insights into the lives of coastal residents and the histories that have shaped these locales.

After the recording, we caught up with Kaz Laser for an exclusive interview, where he shared his reflections on the show and the newfound knowledge he gained:

Discovering the Context of Coastal Living

Kaz Laser's Insight:
"I was genuinely surprised to learn that Japan is home to over 3,000 lighthouses. I rarely visit the sea, so I had never considered their significance before. The presence of a lighthouse indicates that people have lived in that area, and it reminded me of the rich tapestry of daily life that unfolds along the coast. This show was a valuable opportunity to reaffirm that perspective."

Key Discoveries During Filming

Kaz Laser on Eye-Opening Revelations:
"One particular find that stood out to me was the secret behind the wet suits of the Ama divers in Noto Peninsula. It became clear how rationally designed they are, enabling divers to perform essential movements efficiently. While these facts may be common knowledge for those in maritime professions, I had little exposure to such insights in my daily life. This experience has provided a wealth of information that often remains undisclosed."

New Perspectives on Lighthouses

On Lighthouse Awareness:
"Items we don't consciously observe, like lighthouses, may still occupy our visual field without being processed as relevant information. Although I visit Tokyo Bay, I struggle to recall if I ever noticed the lighthouses there. However, through this program, I feel that my awareness of the sea has evolved. I now find myself more mindful of the lighthouses during my everyday activities, especially during moments like crossing the Rainbow Bridge when I’m reminded of the sea."

Collaborating with Olin

Kaz Laser's Take on Olin:
"Though she often comes across as 'airheaded' due to her variety show persona, Olin possesses a solid foundation of knowledge and broad conversation skills. She bears a multifaceted perspective due to her lifestyle split between Aomori and Tokyo. During our filming, her thoughtful comments revealed her understanding, showcasing her ability not only to present information but to interpret it through her lens."

Reflections on Overcoming Fear

Kaz Laser on Changing Perspectives:
"While I haven’t completely overcome my childhood fear of the sea, I’ve learned to see how sea trade connects to our lives, allowing me to appreciate it from a different angle. The notion that ‘the sea is healing’ intrigued me since I had never viewed it that way previously. I’m now curious about the reasons people gather to view sunsets at the seaside; there must be a rationale behind it that can broaden our understanding of the ocean."

Noto's Community Resilience

Kaz Laser's Thoughts on Noto after the Earthquake:
"I visited the Noto Peninsula only before the earthquake, and I now feel an urge to witness its current state. It’s disheartening to see the changes, yet there are individuals striving to restore the area, while others are focused on creating a new environment. The divergent choices reflect how each person is living in the present. My desire to understand the lives of locals there has expanded."
