New Water Safety Feature by Airbnb
In a significant move to ensure guest safety, Airbnb has launched an innovative feature designed specifically for travelers staying at listings with pools or near water. This app-based tool provides guests with expert tips and example questions to ask hosts about safety measures in and around water areas.
As the summer of 2023 approaches, the trend of travelers seeking accommodations close to water bodies has surged, and it's expected to continue with the upcoming North American Labor Day celebrations. With an increased interest in water-front listings, Airbnb aims to equip guests with the necessary resources to enjoy their stay responsibly while prioritizing safety.
When guests book a property featuring a pool or situated near water, the new in-app feature will highlight safety tips crafted by experts as well as prompt relevant questions they can ask hosts regarding safety measures at the listing and its surroundings. This new feature was announced on August 20, 2023, with the goal of enhancing awareness surrounding water safety.
These expert tips have been developed in collaboration with Safe Kids Worldwide, a member of Airbnb's Trust and Safety Advisory Council. They focus on educating guests about preventive measures to avoid water-related accidents, including general safety guidance and specific reminders when entering the water. Key pointers include:
- - Never swim alone, especially in unfamiliar waters.
- - Be aware of crucial safety factors, including water depth, entry and exit points, safety signage, and nearby rescue equipment.
- - Verify emergency procedures and contacts, ensuring preparedness to seek assistance if needed.
- - Avoid the use of alcohol or medication while boating, swimming, or supervising others near water.
Once a reservation is confirmed, this feature will automatically present relevant examples of questions that guests can use to inquire about the listing's safety features. These questions will cover areas such as the safety amenities of the listing, access points to pools or water areas, rules regarding water safety within and around the property, and potential hazards guests should be aware of.
"While incidents related to water safety at Airbnb listings are extremely rare, we want our guests to be fully prepared and enjoy a worry-free stay. This new feature is designed to help guests always have access to the latest information and ensure their safety and that of their loved ones when around water," said Tara Bunch, Airbnb’s Global Operations Head.
Moreover, Torine Creppy, President of Safe Kids Worldwide, expressed, "Water-related accidents can occur silently and quickly, with no struggle or cry for help. However, they are preventable. One of the most critical things a family can do before heading to a water destination is to discuss safety measures and create a plan. I am thrilled to partner with Airbnb to provide families with the information and resources needed to help children enjoy a safe and fun experience on their vacations."
Airbnb acknowledges its ongoing commitment to providing water safety information to guests, and this new feature represents an extension of that effort. The company encourages hosts to detail essential safety information related to their properties and surroundings, ensuring guests can make informed decisions before finalizing their accommodation.
For years, Airbnb has worked in conjunction with organizations like Safe Kids Worldwide to run campaigns focused on pool safety, providing hosts with information and guidance on safe practices. Additionally, in the U.S., Airbnb has collaborated with various companies to allow hosts to purchase pool fences at a reduced rate, as evidence shows that a fence can reduce the risk of drowning in children by 83%, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
