Karmanos Cancer Institute Welcomes Dr. Paige Aiello
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is thrilled to announce the addition of Dr. Paige Aiello, a highly qualified breast surgeon who hails from Southeast Michigan, to its Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team (MDT). Dr. Aiello's expertise encompasses advanced techniques in breast cancer surgery, particularly in the areas of oncoplastic surgery and axillary lymph node procedures.
A New Hope for Breast Cancer Patients
Dr. Aiello's practice focuses on the delicate balance of effective cancer treatment while striving to maintain the aesthetics of the breast. Her approach includes not only the surgical removal of breast tumors but also innovative methods such as immediate lymphatic reconstruction to mitigate the risk of lymphedema post-surgery. According to Dr. Aiello, “The diagnosis of breast cancer in itself can be very overwhelming. I chose breast surgery to bring hope to women who are battling this disease and discuss options that can assist in preventing cancer from returning.”
Starting in July 2025, she began her patient consultations at various Karmanos locations, including Detroit, Dearborn, Farmington Hills, and Roseville. Dr. Aiello's belief in the importance of innovative research and clinical trials aligns with Karmanos’ status as a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center dedicated to improving patient care through advancement in treatment methodologies.
The Expertise She Brings
With a background rooted in deep research and a commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration, Dr. Aiello specializes in treating conditions involving the axilla after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Her proficiency in oncoplastic surgery enables her to effectively blend oncological needs with cosmetic concerns, offering women concerned about breast appearances new avenues of treatment. Furthermore, she is adept in the latest localization devices that enhance surgical precision.
Dr. Aiello's training in axillary lymph node dissection allows her to work closely with reconstructive surgeons to ensure patients receive comprehensive treatment in a single surgical experience. “Immediate lymphatic reconstruction is a groundbreaking approach that reduces the complications often faced after conventional axillary surgery,” she explains.
Returning to Her Roots
Being a Southeast Michigan native, Dr. Aiello is excited to return home and contribute to the community she knows and cares for deeply. She earned her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed her residency at the Detroit Medical Center, along with a Master of Science in medical physiology from Loyola University Chicago. Her educational background is complemented by her undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame.
The leadership at Karmanos Cancer Institute views Dr. Aiello's return as a substantial asset. Dr. George Yoo, Chief Medical Officer at Karmanos, commented, “Dr. Aiello is a tremendous addition to our Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team. She brings expertise that will expand the treatment options we are able to offer, ensuring our patients receive care tailored to their individual needs.”
