Okayama University Hosts Symposium on Carbon Neutrality Initiatives



On March 31, 2026, Okayama University, located in Okayama City and led by President Tomoyuki Nasu, organized a significant symposium titled the "Okayama University Carbon Neutrality Initiative Symposium" at the Okayama Convention Center. This event aimed to explore practical solutions towards achieving a carbon-neutral society while leveraging the unique characteristics of the region and fostering collaboration with surrounding areas.

Approximately 100 participants from local governments, businesses, and academic institutions came together for this face-to-face event, engaging in dynamic discussions centered on carbon neutrality. The symposium commenced with Professor Tsutomu Ono from the Graduate School of Environmental Life Science, who emphasized the transition period faced by the chemical industry in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture, particularly in the Mizushima industrial complex, and highlighted the effective utilization of biomass resources aimed at establishing a circular society in the northern region.

Professor Ono laid out the symposium’s objective, stating, "Our theme is ‘Circulating Carbon as a Resource’ and today, we aim to contemplate a sustainable future where the Okayama and Setouchi regions can integrate resources and energy while maintaining industrial activities." Following his introduction, Professor Hidenori Yamada from Kanazawa University shared insights on the significance and trends regarding CO2 capture technology through the presentation titled "The Importance and Trends in CO2 Reduction and Negative Emission."

Professor Yamada discussed the utilization of amine-based CO2 separation and capture technology, as well as Direct Air Capture solutions. He underscored the vital role of CO2 capture, utilization, and storage technologies in achieving carbon neutrality, emphasizing the urgent need for further innovations.

Continuing the expert presentations, Hirofumi Imai from Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., along with the Chemical Engineering Society's regional collaboration committee, discussed the ongoing carbon neutrality efforts in the Shunan complex. His insights included how collaboration among industrial entities, local governments, and the Chemical Engineering Society supports a cooperative framework to create actionable plans towards the 2050 vision.

Additionally, leading executive Hiroshi Odagiri from Kanadevia Co., Ltd. presented their "Waste to X" project, highlighting various initiatives ranging from CO2 capture technologies at waste incineration power facilities to hydrogen production trials in Yamanashi Prefecture. These efforts aim for simultaneous greenhouse gas reductions and growth towards a circular economy.

The event concluded with a panel discussion on resource and energy cycles within the Okayama and Setouchi regions, where speakers and attendees exchanged ideas. They delved into the potential of harnessing the unique characteristics of the Mizushima industrial region, alongside the abundant biomass resources and CO2 recycling possibilities from local waste.

Okayama University is committed to promoting carbon neutrality and sustainable industrial structures that are responsive to regional characteristics. As a hub of innovative research and collaboration, the university is eager to contribute positively to both local development and global environmental goals.
