Launching the Navarro-Cabrera Scholarship for MDC Students in International Affairs
The Launch of the Navarro-Cabrera Scholarship
Miami Dade College (MDC) and the World Affairs Council of Miami (WACM) have unveiled a significant initiative geared towards fostering future leaders in international affairs. The new Navarro-Cabrera Scholarship is designed to support outstanding students at MDC who are passionate about pursuing careers in public service, diplomacy, and global leadership. The scholarship is a result of generous contributions from the Diaz Cala–Balonek Family Catalyst Fund, which aims to nurture the next generation of leaders in these vital fields.
The initiative honors two distinguished figures in public service: The Honorable Bernie Navarro, U.S. Ambassador to Peru, and The Honorable Kevin Marino Cabrera, U.S. Ambassador to Panama. Their careers symbolize a deep commitment to international engagement and the expansion of opportunities for youth.
Nicolás Filet, a promising second-year student from the Miami Dade College Honors College, has been named the inaugural Navarro-Cabrera Scholar. He is currently studying international relations and has demonstrated a strong dedication to his field through various engagements. As part of this scholarship, he will receive financial support aimed at enabling student travel to Washington, D.C. to visit significant academic and foreign policy institutions.
Additionally, the scholarship aims to bridge the gap between students and local opportunities in South Florida, providing connections with diplomats, policymakers, and local leaders through WACM. Nicolás, in his role as a WACM intern, has already contributed to international programming and had the honor of introducing the President of Lithuania during a recent address at MDC.
Aaron Rosen, President and Founder of WACM, highlights the importance of this scholarship, stating that it embodies the intellectual curiosity and commitment to public service that the program seeks to promote. He expressed gratitude towards the Diaz Cala–Balonek Family Catalyst Fund for their support in creating pathways for globally-minded students.
This scholarship is a testament to the strong partnership formed between MDC and WACM, which focuses on enhancing the learning experiences of students by bringing global leaders and international affairs to the forefront of academic discussions. The program not only aims to prepare students for careers in diplomacy and public service but also to ensure that they are equipped with the knowledge, relationships, and experiences necessary to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
