The survey, involving 929 hiring managers, painted a picture of the modern recruitment process heavily influenced by artificial intelligence. Notably, 61% of those surveyed admitted that AI-generated resumes frequently make candidates appear more qualified than they actually are. This misrepresentation can lead to significant repercussions in the workplace. A staggering 62% of hiring managers have reported terminating employees upon discovering that their real-world competencies did not align with the artificially-enhanced skills presented on their resumes.
Additionally, nearly half (49%) of hiring managers stated that candidates often struggle to substantiate their AI-boosted claims during the interview process, leading to an overall sense of distrust when assessing potential hires.
The Surge in Applications

Approximately 20% of companies surveyed indicated that they are considering implementing a pay-to-apply model, with nearly 90% of these respondents stating they are at least somewhat inclined to adopt such a system.
The volume of applications has reportedly surged, with 73% of hiring teams observing significantly more applications compared to previous years. Within just 24 hours of job postings, 20% of companies receive between 51 to 100 applications, while 19% report an influx of 101 to 500 applications, and 7% even receive more than 500 applications within that timeframe. This unexpected spike has left many recruiters grappling with how to efficiently assess candidates while ensuring quality.
Hiring managers have become astute in identifying the telltale signs of AI-produced resumes. Common indicators include unnatural phrasing (66%), misalignment of stated skills (63%), and a pervasive use of buzzwords (62%). In fact, 54% support a limited integration of AI in the resume crafting process, while only a small minority (9%) believe candidates should not utilize AI at all in their applications.
