Sweet Treats Inspired by Art: New Limited Edition Desserts at Hakone Emoa Terrace

Sweet Treats Inspired by Art: New Limited Edition Desserts at Hakone Emoa Terrace

Hakone Emoa Terrace, managed by Onko Chishin Co., situated in Kanagawa Prefecture, is once again blending fine art with culinary delights. From July 1, 2026, this destination hotel is set to unveil its summer limited-edition sweets, "Cool Joy". This initiative is part of a collaborative project with the Hakone Lalique Museum, where the exhibition, "Cultural Exchange of 'Kawaii' Between Japan and France Through Rene Lalique", is currently taking place.

The original dessert draws inspiration from the 1944 perfume bottle, "Cool Joy", designed by Marc Lalique, the son of renowned artist Rene Lalique. The bottle features a unique heart-shaped hollow at its center, perfectly encapsulating the essence of "joyful heart" in French. The elegant form has captivated many over the years, bringing a sense of refined beauty.

The dessert itself is a delightful creation, combining a creamy fromage blanc and white chocolate mousse, intensified with a hidden raspberry jelly core. Each treat is layered with aromatic yomogi (mugwort) biscuit at the base and finished with a striking white chocolate coating. To elevate its charm, a vibrant golden passion fruit sauce is poured in a heart shape, adding a lovely touch to its presentation. The dessert harmoniously balances the rich creaminess of cheese with the fresh tartness of raspberry and passion fruit, making it a perfect, light treat for the summer.

Connecting Art and Cuisine: The Second Edition of Collaborative Sweets

This delectable offering marks the second collaboration in a series at the Hakone Lalique Museum, ongoing until December 6, 2026. Each season will introduce a new sweet, with the initial spring release featuring a cherry chiffon cake.

In this exhibition, the artistic brilliance of Rene Lalique is reinterpreted through the lens of "kawaii" culture, illustrating the delightful intersections of art and food at Emoa Terrace. It offers visitors a uniquely curated experience where one can enjoy both artistic excellence and culinary creativity.

Exhibition: "Cultural Exchange of 'Kawaii' Between Japan and France"

The exhibition showcases the works of Rene Lalique, a master craftsman represented in both Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. It spotlights the connections in aesthetic values between Japan and France. In the late 19th century, the influence of Japanese ukiyo-e and craftsmanship on Europe sparked the Japonisme movement, significantly impacting French decorative arts.

Lalique's designs, which often feature motifs from nature, plants, insects, and female figures, exhibit a delicate and ornamental style that resonates with Japanese beauty. These artistic styles eventually influenced the formation of Taisho Romance culture and the emergence of "kawaii" in Japan. By focusing on Lalique’s charming motifs and elegant designs, this exhibition invites an exploration of how Japanese and French cultures have mutually enriched the concept of “kawaii.”
