Kanagawa's Pal System Launches CO2 Reduction Initiative with Weekly Points Program

Pal System's Commitment to Decarbonization in Kanagawa

In celebration of the International Year of Cooperatives, Pal System Kanagawa, located in Yokohama, is partnering with Kanagawa Prefecture to launch a new program for reducing CO2 emissions. This initiative encourages residents to return delivery bags used in their shopping, with the aim of increasing recycling rates and thereby mitigating carbon emissions.

Weekly Points Incentive

The program, named "Let's Bring Back the Delivery Bag Points," rewards users for returning their delivery bags. For each bag returned, participants can earn one point, with the potential to accumulate a maximum of five points weekly. These points can be redeemed for one yen each when making purchases.

The campaign will run from October to December, encouraging residents to engage in easy and effective carbon reduction strategies from the comfort of their homes. Points can be collected by either handing the bags to delivery staff or placing them out for collection in designated bins.

Recycling Process

Returned bags are processed and transformed into pellets, which can be repurposed into construction materials and plastic bags, significantly contributing to a circular economy. In addition to delivery bags, Pal System Kanagawa also recycles other reusable and recyclable packaging materials. By submitting a recycling application, users can also earn "Pal R Points" for their efforts.

Visualizing CO2 Reduction

To enhance efficiency in plastics recycling, Pal System works towards a more thorough collection process during deliveries. By tracking and segregating the materials from delivery bags, they can ensure that single-source plastics are effectively recycled, leading to a remarkable 92% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to general waste incineration.

This significant reduction is supported through collaboration with Earth Hacks Inc., based in Shibuya, Tokyo, which specializes in visualizing the carbon footprint of products and services. Their detailed calculations allow users to see the impact of their recycling efforts.
