On December 3, 2025, the city of São Paulo, Brazil, achieved a monumental milestone by earning the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for operating the world's largest municipal food security program. This recognition not only highlights São Paulo as a leading example in global food access policies but also sets a precedent for cities around the world striving to ensure food security for their populations.

The ceremony took place in Paraisópolis, a lower-income community in the southern part of the city, where the city's mayor, Ricardo Nunes, accepted the award from Camila Borenstain, a representative from Guinness. During the event, Nunes spoke passionately about the importance of food security, emphasizing that it is a fundamental human right recognized by the World Health Organization. He stated, “Only those who have experienced hunger truly understand the significance of robust food programs.”

The Food Distribution Triumph

The record was established after an official audit by Guinness confirmed an impressive distribution of 933.8 metric tons of food in just 24 hours. São Paulo currently provides over 3 million meals daily, catering to its diverse population. The success of this initiative is rooted in a comprehensive network that includes prepared meals, fresh produce, and essential food baskets.

The core of the program is the School Meal Program, which ensures that over one million students receive up to five meals daily. Notably, 325,000 children in early childhood education also benefit from monthly deliveries of milk. These efforts are further bolstered by the Basic Food Basket program, where the city distributes 421,000 food baskets each month to vulnerable families.

Continuing to expand its reach, the city also features initiatives such as Bom Prato Paulistano, which provides 7,000 affordable meals each day, and the Cozinha Escola Network, which serves 26,000 meals daily while offering professional training. Additionally, the Cozinha Cidadã Network distributes 15,000 meals daily to residents on the city’s outskirts.

Community Engagement and Mobilization

A historic mobilization event on November 25, known as the D-Day for Food Security, marked a significant step in the journey towards this record. More than 5,600 voting centers were set up throughout the city, and 1,500 volunteers participated on the streets to help facilitate the food distribution effort.

The city also operates Solidarity Stores, which provide discounts of up to 50% on essential items for those enrolled in the CadÚnico program, a federal social assistance initiative. Additionally, the Food Bank plays a crucial role by donating 55 tons of food monthly to various social institutions across São Paulo.
