Cumulus Neuroscience has pioneered a groundbreaking approach to at-home cognitive assessments for individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) through the innovative NeuLogiq® Platform. Recently, the final results of the CNS-102 study were published in Scientific Reports, showcasing the feasibility and usability of this platform in a patient population typically coping with significant cognitive and motor impairments.

The study, conducted in partnership with the PRECISIONALS initiative at Trinity College Dublin, represents an important emergence of digital health solutions in the realm of neuroscience, offering hope for enhancing patient assessments in everyday settings. The study involved 28 participants, including individuals with ALS, FTD, and matched healthy controls, who engaged with the NeuLogiq platform during an eight-month protocol that included regular home assessments and in-clinic benchmarks.

Key Findings: Usability and Effectiveness



The striking results revealed that 82% of ALS participants found the NeuLogiq platform easy to use, while 75% expressed a positive overall opinion of the technology. These findings are particularly significant, given the physical challenges faced by individuals with such debilitating conditions. The platform employs a 16-channel wireless dry-sensor EEG headset along with a series of gamified neurocognitive tasks, covering vital areas such as executive function, memory, language, social cognition, and psychomotor speed. Notably, the seamless integration of these assessments allowed researchers to gather high-quality data with a remarkable 92% session completion rate.

Dr. Brian Murphy, Chief Scientific Officer of Cumulus, heralded the publication as a critical milestone. In addition to the usability metrics, the study also offered exploratory longitudinal insights into cognitive functions, highlighting potential changes in speech fluency and emotion recognition over time—trends often overlooked in traditional neuropsychological tests. Such insights underscore the importance of consistent, multimodal home assessments, which may capture neurological changes that clinic-based evaluations might miss, enhancing our understanding of disease progression.

Professor Orla Hardiman, a lead investigator in this research, underscored the necessity of multifaceted assessments for ALS–FTD patients, stating that current clinical tools fail to fully encompass the cognitive and behavioral shifts that characterize these disorders. The CNS-102 study illustrates a promising shift towards integrating home-based tools for a fuller understanding of patient experiences.
