Montefiore Einstein Unveils Newly Renovated Labor and Delivery Unit
Montefiore Einstein has proudly presented its newly renovated labor and delivery unit at Jack D. Weiler Hospital, a significant enhancement to maternity care in the Bronx. Funded by a generous grant of $9.68 million through New York State's Healthcare Transformation Program, the unit has undergone extensive renovations designed to improve patient experience and operational efficiency.
Located on the sixth floor of the hospital at 1825 Eastchester Road, this updated maternal-child unit has restructured work processes and upgraded infrastructure in key areas, including birthing suites, obstetric surgical facilities, and triage and waiting areas. Angela Gonzalez-Perez, Vice President of Operations and Executive Director of the hospital, emphasized the importance of creating a warm and welcoming environment for patients, especially given that the hospital serves as the sole regional perinatal center in the Bronx, catering to high-risk pregnancies across the Bronx and parts of Queens.
“The renovated space reflects our commitment to providing exceptional care,” stated Gonzalez-Perez. “We aim to be a premier academic medical center that transforms health outcomes and enhances lives.”
Enhancements in Patient Experience
The renovated labor and delivery suite boasts modern features designed to elevate the patient experience. Each birthing room now includes a private bathroom, restructured clinical workstations, and an updated triage area with six triage points and one evaluation station. The obstetric surgical area has also been modernized, including a Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) dedicated to cesarean sections with four beds, along with advanced improvements made to the three operating rooms within the unit. The lighting throughout the unit has been upgraded to provide a more inviting and soothing atmosphere.
Moreover, Montefiore Einstein has invested in cutting-edge remote monitoring instruments to assist both patients and clinical staff, while also enhancing food options to improve overall patient satisfaction.
Under the leadership of Dr. Mark H. Einstein, who oversees the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women's Health, the hospital has expanded its medical staff to include 26 new specialists in critical obstetric care, adolescent medicine, and oncofertility, as well as advanced practice nurses and physician assistants. Services such as universal depression screening, collaborative reproductive psychiatry, and specialized outpatient postpartum care for high-risk pregnancies continue to evolve, reflecting the hospital's dedication to comprehensive maternal health.
Dr. Rodney Wright, Vice President of Obstetrics, remarked on the improved capacity to manage complex cases in a fresh, attractive environment for families. “These technological advancements and workflow reorganizations have readied us to handle the most intricate cases more effectively,” he affirmed.
Dr. Mark H. Einstein expressed his pride in unveiling the unit and the ongoing expansion of services available to their patients and families. He also serves as a professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
The renovation of the Labor and Delivery Unit has been executed in phases to ensure continuous patient care without interruption. As of now, five out of the six planned phases have been completed, with the final phase expected to wrap up by early 2027, which includes further modernization of the last two delivery rooms and the upgrade to a back service elevator.
Overall, this newly renovated facility stands as a testament to Montefiore Einstein’s commitment to advancing maternal health care in New York, ensuring that the community receives the highest quality of care.
By investing in such vital upgrades, Montefiore Health demonstrates its unwavering dedication to enhancing patient care, especially in the area of maternal health, which plays a crucial role in the health of families across the community.
