In an exciting initiative to strengthen ties within the coffee industry, winners of the Julius Meinl Barista Cup embarked on a remarkable journey to Honduras, witnessing the origins of the coffee they proudly serve at their cafes. This trip was organized in collaboration with FAIRTRADE Austria and the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Fairtrade (CLAC), aiming to foster a deeper connection between baristas and coffee producers.

A Transformative Experience



The delegation featured esteemed baristas including Raffy Vajio from the UAE, overall champion of the Barista Cup, and others like Vladimir Chzou, Luca Riccardi, and Mario Benetseder—all recognized for their exceptional skills in coffee preparation. The visit coincided with the peak coffee harvesting season in January, when vibrant red cherries adorned the coffee trees. For many participants, this experience was life-changing. Mario Benetseder remarked, “Seeing the coffee picked fresh from the tree, learning about the processing stages, and meeting the people behind the product completely reshaped my perception of coffee.”

Hartwig Kirner, CEO of FAIRTRADE Austria, emphasized the significance of such excursions, stating, “This trip connects both ends of the coffee supply chain—producers and baristas. It promotes knowledge-sharing, enhances understanding of the multitude of challenges farmers face, and reinforces the Fairtrade mission of cultivating a sustainable coffee future.”

Through Fairtrade initiatives, farmers are guaranteed a minimum price for their products, along with a Fairtrade Premium that cooperatives can reinvest into community and sustainability projects. Such financial security is vital, especially given the fluctuating nature of global coffee prices.

Exploring Challenges and Innovative Solutions



During their visit, the baristas toured cooperatives like COPRACNIL and COCAMOL, which are committed to enhancing coffee quality and yield while supporting farmers' welfare. Their initiatives focus on developing rust-resistant coffee plants and promoting agroforestry, which are crucial strategies for ensuring the viability of coffee farming as a career choice for future generations.

They also visited the Instituto Copan Galel in Copán, which offers a three-year Agroforestry Baccalaureate program aimed at fostering technical development and innovation. This program, funded by the Fairtrade Premium, is making higher education accessible; notably, the president of COPRACNIL’s daughter is a current student, eager to combine her academic aspirations with managing her family farm.

The Originals Bio Fairtrade product line, launched in 2023, has quickly become a favorite among business-to-business customers and is hailed as Julius Meinl's most successful launch to date. This adventure underlined the importance of collaboration among producers, roasters, and coffee enthusiasts to promote Fairtrade's goals.

Jimmin Soriano, a former president of COCAMOL, expressed how vital Fairtrade is to the coffee production community: “Without Fairtrade and organic certification, I wouldn't still be in coffee production. The quest for better markets and opportunities fuel our passion for continuing to cultivate and sell coffee.” His collective sentiment reflects deeper issues facing the industry; in a time of uncertainty, investments at the production level facilitated by Fairtrade are essential for creating a more sustainable and equitable coffee sector.
