ActiMethod Kichijoji School Opening in March 2026
In an exciting development for education in Japan, ActiMethod Kichijoji will open its doors in March 2026, offering a groundbreaking approach to English learning that blends typing with language skills. Developed by i GO Co., Ltd., the ActiMethod program has gained traction across the nation, with over 100 schools operating as of December 2025. This trendy method aims to accommodate the evolving needs of students in an era where English education is essential.
The Evolution of English Education in Japan
It's been over three years since English became a formal subject in Japanese elementary schools. With significant changes to the curriculum beginning in fiscal 2020 for elementary and 2021 for junior high, students in grades five and six now receive two classes of English each week, totaling 70 hours per year. The curriculum focuses on enhancing four essential skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These skills are crucial as the goal shifts toward developing the foundational abilities necessary for effective communication.
Moreover, the vocabulary students are expected to learn has expanded dramatically. In junior high, for example, the number of words rose from 1,200 to between 1,600 and 1,800. The curriculum emphasizes courses conducted exclusively in English, reflecting an overall push for a more immersive language experience. Additionally, programming has become a required subject alongside English, further reshaping the learning landscape for elementary students.
As of the 2024 university entrance exams set for January 2025, new guidelines will also be implemented, significantly altering the approach to high-stakes testing.
Why Choose ActiMethod?
The ActiMethod stands out for its unique focus on rapid vocabulary acquisition. Students engage in typing-based exercises instead of traditional writing, which allows for quick and efficient learning. This method fosters a simultaneous development of spelling and pronunciation as students type words while hearing their pronunciation. With practice, students report that they can type significantly faster than they would write by hand.
