A Major Change in Health Insurance Dependency Rules in Japan
Starting October 2025, significant adjustments will occur in Japan's health insurance dependency regulations, notably impacting families with young adults aged 19 to 23. The previous threshold for being classified under a parent’s health insurance plan, known as the "130,000 yen barrier," will expand under specific conditions to include individuals earning up to 150,000 yen.
What’s New?
Previously, only those earning less than 1.3 million yen annually were eligible to be dependents under their parent's health insurance. With the new guidelines, the limit is raised, but only for a certain age group and within defined earning constraints. This means that parents of young adults can now provide coverage for their children who earn between 1.3 million yen and 1.5 million yen, as long as they meet certain conditions.
Key Details to Consider
1.
Age Criteria: The new regulations apply solely to children aged between 19 to 23 years. This age limitation emphasizes the importance of addressing the needs of young adults who are often entering the workforce or pursuing higher education.
2.
Parental Reporting: One crucial aspect to note is that the transition to the new system will not happen automatically. Parents must actively report their child's eligibility for coverage. This rule is designed to ensure accuracy and prevent any potential abuse of the system, emphasizing the active role parents will need to take.
3.
Avoiding Losses: Families must be aware of the necessity to switch to the new insurance structure proactively; ignoring this requirement could lead to unintentional losses in coverage or financial support for eligible young adults.
