A Commemoration of Shinjuku Gyoen's 120th Anniversary
This year marks a significant milestone for Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, commemorating 120 years since its opening. To celebrate this occasion, JAPAN GOLD LABEL has partnered with renowned illustrator
mumea to create an exclusive line of merchandise that pays homage to the garden's lush landscapes and diverse wildlife.
The Historical Significance of Shinjuku Gyoen
Shinjuku Gyoen has a rich history that dates back over four centuries. Initially given to Tokugawa Ieyasu's retainer, this land evolved through various stages, coming under government ownership during the Meiji era. After serving as an agricultural research facility and botanical garden, it officially opened to the public as a royal garden in 1906. Today, the garden attracts around
2.8 million visitors annually, being a renowned oasis in the heart of Tokyo and an essential site for international diplomacy. In 1949, it was designated as a national park, making it accessible to the general public.
As a testament to its historical importance, the garden has evolved into a cultural and recreational hub featuring a variety of seasonal flora that captivates visitors year-round. In 2020, the establishment of the National Parks Discovery Center at the Information Center further exemplified its commitment to ecological education and outreach to international tourists.
Collaboration with mumea
As part of this 120th-anniversary celebration, mumea has been commissioned to design unique illustrations for
JAPAN GOLD LABEL’s merchandise. One of the standout pieces, titled
"Ever Green", captures the essence of Shinjuku Gyoen with its rich greenery and vibrant seasonal plants such as roses, pansies, and daffodils. The artwork reflects the serene atmosphere of the garden, depicting iconic birds such as kingfishers and various other avian species found within the park.
Mumea shares, _"I wanted to translate the expansive greens, rich nature, and historical gardens into my art. The feeling of laying on the grass and watching waterbirds is something that fills me with joy, and I’m honored to contribute to the garden's 120-year legacy through my illustrations._"
