O'Shaughnessy Ventures Supports Mark Nelson's Mission to Revive Nuclear Energy in Germany

Reviving Nuclear Energy in Germany: A Strategic Initiative by Mark Nelson

O'Shaughnessy Ventures LLC (OSV), a pioneering investment firm known for empowering innovators, has recently awarded its coveted fellowship to energy consultant Mark Nelson. Based in Chicago, Nelson will utilize the generous $100,000 grant to spearhead a campaign aimed at restoring Germany's nuclear energy program.

This initiative comes at a critical juncture, as Germany faces challenges related to energy independence and industrial productivity following the closure of its nuclear power facilities. Nelson's overarching goal is to sway public opinion back in favor of nuclear energy, emphasizing its potential as a reliable power source that could benefit millions of citizens. He plans to organize a Nuclear Restart Conference, inviting leading voices from around the globe to engage citizens and critiquers alike in meaningful discussions about the merits of nuclear energy.

Nelson, who has a Master of Philosophy in nuclear engineering from the renowned Cambridge University, brings over a decade of experience in researching and advising on energy systems on both national and international fronts. He was the founder and managing director of Radiant Energy Group, a consultancy well-regarded for its insights into nuclear power strategies. His work has garnered attention in major publications, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Within his fellowship framework, he intends not only to organize the aforementioned conference but also to conduct thorough public opinion polls to gauge the sentiments of ordinary Germans regarding nuclear energy. Moreover, he plans to tour various towns and villages formerly reliant on nuclear power to directly share insights about its value and feasibility.

In a statement about this project, Nelson remarked, “German reactors were among the best globally three years ago, and our engineers remain unmatched. Restarting the nuclear reactors is the most efficient way to regain energy independence while steering the future of Europe towards sustainability.”

The implications of a nuclear power resurgence in Germany could be substantial. Nelson argues that, if successful, a reactivation of nuclear facilities could not only stabilize the national power supply but also could reverse the country's recent industrial declines. His tenacity is fortified by the knowledge that a nuclear restart has the potential to generate substantial power within a mere three years.

Jim O'Shaughnessy, founder and CEO of OSV, highlighted the profound role that nuclear energy plays in tackling climate change and praised Nelson, saying, “Mark combines significant technical knowledge with the crucial ability to communicate effectively, a combination necessary for driving impactful change.”

This fellowship, part of OSV’s broader initiative launched in 2023, aims to discover and support the world’s most courageous creators and innovators. In 2025, OSV plans to award a total of ten fellowships, along with additional grants to support other aspiring innovators in the community.

As the first recipient of the 2025 fellowships, Mark Nelson’s project reflects OSV's commitment to fostering revolutionary ideas that can transform societies. With applications for future fellowships set to remain open until April 30, 2025, this initiative encourages a wide range of innovators to harness their creativity to address pressing global issues.
