Beltways Launches the First Accelerator in America, Revolutionizing Mass Transit
Beltways Launches America's First Accelerator
Beltways, an innovative transportation technology company, recently celebrated a milestone during the public debut of its M5 Accelerator. This groundbreaking event took place at the First Financial Center in downtown Cincinnati, marking the arrival of America's first-ever accelerator system on October 5, 2026. After six years of intense development, this major advancement introduces a new category of mass transit focused on pedestrian transportation.
A Revolutionary Design
The M5 Accelerator is a 120-foot marvel that merges the benefits of a moving walkway with the speed typically associated with trams. Unlike traditional moving walkways that maintain a constant speed, the Accelerator allows users to embark at a comfortable walking pace and gradually transition to higher speeds before returning to a stroll as they exit. This innovative approach not only enhances user experience, it also represents a significant leap in pedestrian movement technology.
The modular construction of the M5 Accelerator enables it to be installed directly over existing floors, eliminating the extensive renovations often required for traditional pedestrian systems. The installation of the Cincinnati unit was completed in a remarkably short period, taking just 53 hours without any disruptions to facility operations. Since its launch, the system has welcomed thousands of users, including those with mobility aids like wheelchairs and strollers.
John Yuksel, CEO and co-founder of Beltways, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "The M5 combines the continuous flow of a moving walkway, the speed of a tram, and the intelligence of an autonomous vehicle. It offers users the thrill akin to that of an amusement ride."
Development Journey
The journey to this public unveiling was marked by dedication and innovation. Founded by brothers John and Matine Yuksel, Beltways aimed to bring to life their father's visionary idea of accelerating walkways. Over six generations of technology were honed to arrive at the optimized design in the M5 Accelerator. Each unit comprises standardized, interlinked modules equipped with independent speed controls, allowing for scalability in manufacturing, quick installations, and straightforward maintenance—all monitored in real-time by Beltways' proprietary operating system.
Matine Yuksel, the COO, noted that the public demonstration was not merely a showcase but a pivotal transition for the company. He indicated that, "This installation represents a crucial shift from novelty to practical utility, providing insights into how the technology can be applied in real-world scenarios."
Cincinnati’s Role in Innovation
The M5 Accelerator’s deployment in Cincinnati was made possible through a partnership between Beltways, the city of Cincinnati, First Financial Center, and the facility operator Legends Global. This collaboration was instrumental in coordinating stakeholders and navigating the necessary permitting processes for such an innovative transit solution.
Brandon Rudd, Deputy Director of Strategic Growth for the City of Cincinnati, remarked on the importance of hosting this technology, highlighting Cincinnati's role as a hub for innovation.
"Having this technology in our city offers Cincinnati an opportunity to set a precedent, showcasing advancements in mass transit that can influence other urban landscapes across the U.S.," he added.
Airport Deployments on the Horizon
In response to the successful public demonstration, Beltways is in talks with major airports across the United States. Discussions are underway involving over 30,000 linear feet of potential accelerators to replace conventional moving pathways. This move aligns with the urgent demand for more efficient transportation solutions in high-traffic areas like airports, where pedestrian congestion tends to create significant challenges for travelers.
Beltways envisions a future where its Accelerator technology extends beyond airport terminals into convention centers, urban centers, and university campuses, transforming how short-distance travel is approached. The ultimate goal is to establish a widespread network of accelerators that recalibrate pedestrian transportation as a speedy and efficient means to move across neighborhoods and urban settings.
A Long-Term Vision
This innovation is rooted in a legacy that dates back decades, with previous studies exploring high-speed pedestrian systems in the 1970s and 1980s. Yet, despite advances throughout the years, widespread commercial adoption has been slow. Beltways believes that recent innovations in modular engineering and intelligent automation now present the perfect opportunity to actualize these concepts.
Beginning in San Francisco and developing prototypes in Iowa, the company has established itself as a leader in its field, aiming to change the pedestrian transportation paradigm. John Yuksel concluded, "After six years of hard work, we are no longer asking if the technology can succeed; the question now is how quickly we can produce these modules for broader deployment."
