Trial Operation of 3-Wheeled EVs at Chubu International Airport
In an innovative move aimed at enhancing airport operations, Mitsubishi Auto Lease Co., Ltd., along with Rental Niken Co., Ltd., and Chubu Centrair International Airport Co., Ltd., has kicked off a trial operation of three-wheeled electric vehicles (EVs). The event, which took place on June 17, included an informative session and test rides, followed by the official start of operations on June 18, 2025.
Purpose of the Trial Operation
With regulations allowing the use of three-wheeled vehicles within the airport's restricted area starting June 2024, this initiative is designed to explore the utility of these compact vehicles. The primary goals include assessing their maneuverability and efficiency in airport operations, and aligning the test with the needs of ground handling service providers. Additionally, this project serves the dual purpose of evaluating three-wheeled EVs as a viable option for the decarbonization efforts at Chubu International Airport.
During the trial, participating businesses will be provided with three-wheeled EVs for approximately one week, allowing them to utilize these vehicles in their daily operations. The focus will be on how well these EVs function as shuttle vehicles, while also assessing factors like acceleration performance, environmental impact, and cost benefits. The participants will get direct experience with the unique challenges of EVs, such as range limitations and charging time.
Mitsubishi Auto Lease and Rental Niken will gather and analyze data from this trial to confirm the benefits and effectiveness of three-wheeled EVs, aiming to create a framework that enhances usage in the restricted area.
