Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Appoints Sharon Duez Shaw as New VP and Claims Head

Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Group Welcomes New Leadership

In a significant strategic move, Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Group has appointed Sharon Duez Shaw as the new Vice President and Head of Claims as of August 31, 2026. This decision comes as part of a carefully planned leadership transition, paving the way for a smooth succession from Peter Lambert, the current Senior Vice President, who is set to retire on March 31, 2027. The shift indicates a focused investment in specialty underwriting and service excellence for allied healthcare professionals.

Sharon brings a wealth of experience in specialty insurance, showcasing a strong background in developing high-performing claims organizations. Her strategic approach has been noteworthy in modernizing litigation processes and enhancing operational performance. According to Aaron Pearce, President and CEO of Pharmacists Mutual, Shaw’s extensive claims leadership experience will bolster the insurance group’s capabilities as it strives to be a leader in the specialty underwriting space.

“Sharon's background in specialty insurance and claims leadership makes her an outstanding addition to our organization at an important point in our growth,” Pearce stated, highlighting the critical nature of claims services offered to allied healthcare professionals.

Transformational Leadership in Claims

The claims process is crucial for delivering a satisfactory experience to the allied healthcare businesses and professionals the organization serves. Alison VanOtterloo, Division President, emphasized that Shaw's leadership is poised to enhance their claims organization, focusing on responsiveness, technical expertise, and robust partnerships with agents and insurers.

Sharon's previous tenure as Chief Claims Officer at Vela Insurance, a W. R. Berkley company, coupled with an impressive 14-year stint at AXIS Capital, where she held multiple executive leadership roles, primes her for this new position. Her career reflects a consistent trajectory of leadership and a commitment to elevating claims strategies across the insurance sector.

“I am honored to join Pharmacists Mutual and contribute to an organization with such a strong reputation in specialty insurance,” said Sharon, expressing her excitement about collaborating with Lambert, the claims team, and other leaders across the company. Her goal is to build upon the existing strong foundation and continue to deliver significant value to agents and insureds.

Looking Ahead

As part of the transition plan, Lambert will work closely with Shaw over the next six months, ensuring that the organization is well-equipped to maintain high service standards for its agents, insurers, and strategic partners. The goal is not only to facilitate the transfer of knowledge but also to reinforce the foundation upon which Pharmacists Mutual is built.

Established in 1909, Pharmacists Mutual has a long-standing legacy of providing specialized insurance products tailored for independently owned pharmacies in the U.S. The company is headquartered in Algona, Iowa, and its subsidiaries carry an A- (Excellent) rating by AM Best. The appointment of Shaw marks an exciting new chapter for Pharmacists Mutual, positioning it favorably for future growth as it continues to invest in its specialty insurance capabilities.

With an eye toward innovation and client-focused service, Sharon Duez Shaw is prepared to lead Pharmacists Mutual into its next phase, ensuring it remains at the forefront of specialty insurance for healthcare professionals.
