BMO Financial Group Announces Key Executive Appointments

BMO Financial Group has announced significant leadership changes with the appointment of Tim Cox as the U.S. Country Head, effective November 1, 2026. This decision marks a pivotal moment for the financial institution as it seeks to strengthen its presence in the U.S. market.

Tim Cox's Background

Tim Cox, who joined BMO in 2010, brings with him a wealth of experience in various high-profile roles within the company. Most recently, he has been serving as the U.S. General Counsel since 2022 and has held previous positions including Global Chief Regulatory Officer. His extensive knowledge of both the banking industry and BMO's operational framework makes him a suitable choice for this elevated position.

In his new role, Cox will report directly to Darryl White, the Chief Executive Officer of BMO Financial Group. He will also be a member of the bank's Executive Committee and chair the U.S. Management Committee, where he will be tasked with overseeing the growth and success of BMO's U.S. operations, which include BMO Financial Corp. and BMO Bank N.A.

Darryl White expressed confidence in Cox’s ability to lead by stating, "Tim's leadership, deep understanding of our business and commitment to serving our clients, colleagues, and communities will be key to the continued success of our U.S. franchise." White emphasized that Cox's respected status and past contributions have greatly influenced the bank's growth trajectory over the last 15 years.

Transition of Darrel Hackett

Simultaneously, the announcement includes a significant transition for Darrel Hackett, who has been with BMO for over 22 years, serving as U.S. CEO. Hackett will step down from this role and move into the position of Executive Vice-Chair and Senior Advisor, effective on the same date as Cox's new appointment. White acknowledged Hackett's central role in steering BMO’s North American growth strategy, highlighting his dedication to client advocacy and employee engagement.

Darryl White lauded Hackett by stating, "Darrel has played a central role in advancing our North American growth strategy and helping build the U.S. business we have today. His leadership has strengthened relationships across our markets, ensuring we continue to deliver the insights, advice, and capabilities our clients value most."

The Future of BMO Financial Group

As one of North America's largest banks, BMO is committed to providing a wide range of banking, wealth management, and investment services. With total assets of $1.5 trillion, BMO serves over 13 million customers across Canada, the United States, and select international markets. The leadership transition comes as the bank continues to position itself strategically amid a dynamic financial landscape.

BMO's enduring mission focuses on driving positive change through its commitment to customer service and community engagement. With Tim Cox at the helm of its U.S. operations, BMO aims to bolster its capabilities and enhance its growth trajectory in the years to come.
