Bridging Medicine and Mountains: The Journey of Dr. Kazuhe Ooshiro

In this month's issue of DOCTOR'S MAGAZINE, we shine a spotlight on Dr. Kazuhe Ooshiro, an influential figure at the intersection of medicine and mountain climbing. As the first Japanese professional certified in international mountain medicine, Dr. Ooshiro is making significant strides in mountain healthcare and rescue operations.

Born and raised in Nagano Prefecture, Dr. Ooshiro developed a strong affinity for the mountains from a young age. The influence of his mother, who was frequently ill, ignited his passion for the medical field. After graduating from Nihon University School of Medicine, he aspired to become a physician who could provide comprehensive care, leading him to join the first department of internal medicine at his university. Throughout this time, he traveled extensively during his summer breaks, broadening his horizons and experiences.

A pivotal moment in his career occurred while working in the cardiology department at Sapporo Kōjin Hospital (formerly Ohno Hospital) when he encountered climbers suffering from altitude sickness and dehydration in Nepal. This experience solidified his commitment to becoming a mountain doctor. In 2010, Dr. Ooshiro made history by being the first Japanese to become certified as an international mountain medicine doctor and established Japan's inaugural mountain climbing outpatient clinic at his hospital.

Dr. Ooshiro's passion did not stop there. He went on to become an advisor for the Hokkaido police mountain rescue team, conducting training sessions to equip rescuers with medical skills and sharing knowledge about mountain medicine both domestically and internationally. His contributions have enriched the field significantly.

In 2013, he served as the team doctor for Yuichiro Miura, an 80-year-old mountaineer aiming to summit Mount Everest. This experience further showcased Dr. Ooshiro's expertise and commitment to mountain safety and health. More recently, in 2023, he opened another mountain outpatient clinic, this time at his alma mater, Nihon University Hospital, marking another milestone in his career.

Dr. Ooshiro currently splits his time among various medical institutions in Tokyo and Sapporo, continually striving to build mountain medicine into an academic discipline. He aims to contribute new scientific perspectives from Japan to the global community.

His journey is characterized by a humble demeanor paired with bold action, making him a remarkable figure in the medical field. With a forward-looking vision, Dr. Ooshiro aspires to educate mountain climbers about necessary safety measures and proper health knowledge, ensuring they can enjoy their adventures in the mountains safely.

In addition to the featured article on Dr. Ooshiro, this issue of DOCTOR'S MAGAZINE also includes a special conversation segment, "Special Cross Talk: Palliative Care & Liaison Psychiatry," featuring discussions between Hideto Kashiwagi, who established one of Japan's largest palliative care departments, and Nozomi Oya, a liaison psychiatrist.

Readers will also find a compelling feature on Yamanashi Prefectural Central Hospital, recognized as a crucial healthcare provider in the region, where over 40% of doctors are young residents and specialists eager to make a difference. This aspect highlights the hospital's appeal to young talent amidst nationwide challenges in securing medical personnel.

This month’s issue features a variety of stories from physicians and medical institutions across Japan. It promises to offer valuable insights and perspectives, making for an engaging read for those within the healthcare industry.
