DEWALT's Insights on the Future of Skilled Trades

As the world gears up for the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, DEWALT, a prominent brand under Stanley Black & Decker, has taken a deep dive into the perceptions of the next generation of skilled workers. With a survey sampling over 500 WorldSkills competitors from more than 60 countries, the research sheds light on workforce readiness, training needs, and the current mindset toward skilled careers.

The Importance of Skilled Work

The data highlights an emerging trend where young professionals recognize the significant contributions skilled trades make to the global economy. A notable 76% of respondents identified technical and vocational skills as increasingly crucial. However, a stark reality emerged: 51% felt that not enough young individuals are entering these essential fields.

In addition to statistics, the survey revealed some poignant perceptions. While 71% of the participants noted an enhancement in the public image of vocational careers, 52% still reported being steered toward traditional academic paths. In stark contrast, only 14% were encouraged to consider technical and vocational training.

These findings illuminate a critical disconnect between the recognized value of skilled trades and the current pathways available to pursue them. As Chris Nelson, President and CEO of Stanley Black & Decker, emphasized, “The real economy runs on skilled labor - across housing, transportation, manufacturing, energy, and digital infrastructure.”

Barriers to Entry

One of the main barriers identified was a lack of early exposure to skilled career opportunities. 45% of survey participants voiced that young individuals aren’t introduced to available paths early enough, and 53% felt pressure to pursue conventional university education instead of considering a skilled trade.

Additionally, when asked how industries could motivate more youth to pursue careers in trades, the responses were revealing. A significant 88% stressed the need for financial assistance to make vocational education more accessible. 45% advocated for additional hands-on experiences to allow young people to try skilled work firsthand, while 38% favored paid apprenticeship programs.

By partnering with organizations like WorldSkills, DEWALT seeks to elevate awareness of the rewards associated with skilled professions and enhance access to these career paths. The company's commitment includes sponsoring two Team USA competitors for the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 - Charles “Charlie” Goede, a plumbing apprentice from Connecticut, and Tristan Coates, a residential builder from Florida.
