SAP and Cyberwave Revolutionize Logistics with Fully Autonomous AI Robots

SAP and Cyberwave Unveil Advanced AI-Powered Robotics in Logistics

In a move that showcases the potential of artificial intelligence in the logistics sector, SAP SE, a globally recognized leader in enterprise application software, in collaboration with Cyberwave, a cutting-edge robotics software company, has announced the successful deployment of fully autonomous AI-driven robots within a real SAP logistics warehouse. This initiative not only highlights the advancements made in physical AI capabilities but also signifies a pivotal shift toward integrating robotics into supply chain operations.

The deployment occurred at SAP's logistics facility in St. Leon-Rot, Germany, utilizing the SAP Logistics Management (LGM) cloud solution. This event represents a significant milestone, proving that AI-driven robotics is no longer confined to the realms of research, but is delivering tangible improvements in efficiency. The introduced robots are now handling tasks such as carton folding, packaging, and shipping autonomously, marking a substantial leap in operational productivity.

Integration and Automation: A Seamless Process

The success of this operation is largely attributed to SAP LGM's lightweight architecture and API-first approach, which allows for rapid implementation of robotic automation processes. Commands for the robots are delivered through SAP's physical AI service, enabling end-to-end integration within the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) and Cyberwave's platform within minutes. Tim Kuebler, Head of Warehouse and Shipping at SAP, emphasized the significance of this integration by stating, "By embedding AI-driven robotics into our warehouse operations, we demonstrate that physical AI is not merely a concept but delivers real value today."

Overcoming Challenges in Robotic Automation

However, deploying robots in a logistics environment presents unique challenges. Robots must adeptly handle various irregularly shaped objects, fold and package cartons, move packages, label them, and process shipping orders—all with fluctuating variables. Traditional robotic systems typically require labor-intensive manual coding for every task variation and often malfunction when real-world conditions change.

To address these challenges, Cyberwave has developed an innovative platform geared toward end-to-end solutions for these complexities. It allows operators to swiftly collect training data using intuitive demonstration interfaces, accommodating the variability of tasks in actual warehouse settings. Cyberwave’s approach enables the refinement of vision-language-action (VLA) models and reinforcement learning (RL) models, creating robotic strategies that adapt based on diverse workflows and object types, rather than relying solely on pre-programmed movements.

Consequently, robots are now capable of executing high-variability tasks in dynamic environments. While traditional robotics systems could take weeks to engineer processes, Cyberwave's groundbreaking platform reduces training timelines from weeks to just hours, empowering even non-expert operators to teach robots new tasks through simple demonstrations. The system autonomously adapts to surrounding objects, environments, and workflows.

Simone Di Somma, Co-founder and CEO of Cyberwave, commented on the significance of this partnership, stating, "The deployment of real-world warehouse operations marks a turning point not only for Cyberwave but also showcases the transformative potential of AI-driven robotics in enterprise logistics today. By uniting SAP LGM's robust digital foundation with Cyberwave's data-training capability, we can alleviate the need for meticulous programming, allowing robots to learn and continuously improve on the job."

Results and Advancements

The outcomes at SAP's St. Leon-Rot warehouse are notable, with robots trained and deployed on the Cyberwave platform now autonomously conducting folding, packaging, and in-house shipping tasks. This innovation liberates human workers from repetitive and physically demanding duties while simultaneously boosting warehouse throughput. The entire integration process—from robot training to live operational functionality—was accomplished through SAP BTP and Cyberwave's platform.

As SAP continues to enhance its embodied AI capabilities, it is not only providing value to its clients but is also optimizing its own operations as a benchmark for advanced robotics implementation.
