Costa Rica: The Leading Exporter of Pineapples and Wellness Advocate

Costa Rica is not just known for its breathtaking landscapes and eco-tourism; it has also established itself as the top global exporter of pineapples, playing a vital role in both the economy and health of communities around the world. Between January and September 2025, the country exported an impressive $992 million worth of pineapples, shipping more than 1.5 million tons worldwide. This tropical fruit represents 35% of Costa Rica’s agricultural exports, showcasing its significance on both local and international scales.

A Symbol of Quality and Sustainability

The pineapple from Costa Rica isn't just a delicious treat; it's a natural ambassador for wellness. The cultivation process is steeped in sustainability and harmony with the environment, which positions the country as a beacon of responsible farming practices. The major markets for these exports include the United States, Belgium, and Spain, with European countries increasingly appreciating products that combine flavor with traceability and well-being.

Laura López, CEO of the Costa Rican Trade Promotion Agency (PROCOMER), mentions, "The pineapple of Costa Rica has become synonymous with excellence. Its taste, quality, and innovative practices have made it a favorite in global markets. In a competitive environment, we are committed to maintaining our leadership by introducing new opportunities for exporters and sharing a product that represents the best of Costa Rica — health, sustainability, and trust."

The regions in Costa Rica that are primarily responsible for pineapple production are rich in fertile soil and enjoy a tropical climate, creating ideal growth conditions. This sector generates over 81,000 direct and indirect jobs, significantly boosting rural economies and the livelihoods of agricultural communities. These communities come together under a shared principle: to produce with care and quality.

Commitment to Environmental Responsibility

Costa Rica's leadership in pineapple exports is underpinned by a strict commitment to environmental responsibility. The plantations adhere to certifications like GlobalG.A.P. and Rainforest Alliance, ensuring that sustainable agricultural practices are followed, ecosystems are protected, and community welfare is prioritized. The post-harvest processes ensure that each pineapple reaches consumers fresh, safe, and flavorful.
