A Remarkable Achievement for Okayama University Kendo Club
After a four-year hiatus, the Kendo Club at Okayama University has once again made its mark at the prestigious All Japan Student Kendo Championship. Sotaro Nakamura, a fourth-year student from the School of Medicine, secured a spot in the championship following an outstanding performance at the 72nd Chugoku-Shikoku Student Kendo Championship, held on May 18, 2025, at the Ehime Prefectural Budo Center.
Nakamura’s exceptional skill led him to the top 16 competitors in a tough field of 28 universities from the Chugoku and Shikoku regions. His victory in the fourth round was crucial for his qualification for the national tournament, where only 20 spots were available for male competitors.
Reflecting on his experience, Nakamura expressed gratitude for the support of his teammates, who trained alongside him. He noted, “My fellow club members are invaluable. The matches involved many tough moments, including some that extended into overtime, and there were instances where I was scored upon. However, the encouragement from my teammates helped me stay calm and focused in challenging situations.”
Nakamura also acknowledged the dedication of the alumni and faculty who have supported the club and provided training guidance, attributing his achievement to their contributions. “I am incredibly thankful for the environment we train in and will strive to showcase my Kendo at the upcoming championship,” he stated, displaying eagerness to represent the club in both individual and team competitions at the national level.
