Discover Namerikawa's Cultural Treasures through Augmented Reality
HoloLab Inc., based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has unveiled an exciting new web service called 'Namerikawa AR Toki Sanpo,' designed specifically to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Namerikawa City in Toyama Prefecture. This innovative platform allows users to explore historical sites and cultural assets scattered throughout the old town area by simply using their smartphones.
How It Works
With 'Namerikawa AR Toki Sanpo,' adventurers can point their smartphone cameras at 15 designated spots throughout the city, where they will be greeted by the local mascot, Kirarin. This virtual guide provides engaging and informative insights about the architectural features and histories of various landmarks through augmented reality (AR). As users follow Kirarin's directions, they can collect stamps and engage in a city-wide stamp rally, adding a layer of fun to the historical exploration.
In addition to on-ground experiences, select AR points offer a unique opportunity to explore rarely available 360° panoramic images of building interiors. Users can peek inside the former Tanaka Elementary School's historic main building, which is rumored to have served as an inspiration for a location in the animated film 'Wolf Children,' as well as the scenic views from the second floor of the Hirono House, associated with the rice riots of the Taisho era.
This immersive experience doesn't require any app downloads; visitors can simply access the website through their browser and embark on their historical journey.
Upcoming Events
To introduce this unique AR experience to the public, a pre-launch event will coincide with the Hina Matsuri celebration in Namerikawa, scheduled from February 28 to March 1, 2026. This event will allow visitors to try out the AR guide, and those who collect over five stamps will receive a complimentary paper balloon, reflecting the region's historical medicine practices, provided by staff on-site at the former Miyazaki Sake Brewery.
The full launch of the 'Namerikawa AR Toki Sanpo' service is set for March 21, 2026. This officially marks its availability as a permanent feature, allowing locals and tourists alike to explore the rich culture and history of Namerikawa any time.
Features of 'Namerikawa AR Toki Sanpo'
1. AR City Stamp Rally
Participants will navigate through 15 AR spots set in the city’s historic area, collecting stamps along the way. When the 'AR Camera' feature is activated, Kirarin will explain points of interest. Collecting all stamps fosters additional exploration within the area.
2. Showa Memory Collection
Users can delve into Namerikawa’s history through a collection of 23 sites featuring photographs from the Showa era. By activating the 'Now and Then Camera,' users can view historical photos and recreate them at the same location, capturing memories as they see the evolution of these sites over time. Furthermore, children from the Tanaka Elementary School have contributed by creating AI-enhanced colored versions of black-and-white photos, merging nostalgia with innovation.
3. Kirarin AR Talk
In this feature, users can engage with Kirarin, who shares trivia and interesting facts regarding the cultural and historical significance of Namerikawa, enhancing their connection to the city through AR.
Marketing and Community Engagement
The launch coincides with the Toyama Growth Strategy Conference, an event highlighting the region's development, allowing participants to experience the AR functionalities firsthand.
Embracing Cultural Heritage
Namerikawa City stands out as a historical landmark once thriving on the Hokuriku Highway, home to significant cultural properties such as the former Miyazaki Sake Brewery and the historic Yurin-an, providing a wealth of architectural treasures. Unfortunately, the story behind many of these historical sites is often lost to their physical presence, making it challenging for tourists to fully appreciate their significance. The 'Namerikawa AR Toki Sanpo' project addresses this gap, offering an approachable way to engage with history through technology and interactive experiences.
This initiative is a significant step towards increasing tourism flow to the old town area, previously overshadowed by the more popular firefly squid museum. The AR platform not only enlightens visitors but encourages them to explore historically significant locations, dispelling the barriers to discovery.
Future Aspirations
As HoloLab continues to innovate through the 'Namerikawa AR Toki Sanpo,' the organization aims to contribute valuable insights toward resolving tourism issues faced by local municipalities across Japan. They aspire to pioneer solutions utilizing digital technologies, enabling unique experiences that resonate with cultural assets, thereby delivering a deeper appreciation for Japan's rich history.
In summary, 'Namerikawa AR Toki Sanpo' stands poised to redefine the tourist experience in Namerikawa, combining tradition with cutting-edge technology for an unforgettable exploration of cultural heritage.
