Robin Zeng of CATL Unveils Vision for a Carbon-Neutral Future

Robin Zeng's Vision for a Carbon-Neutral Future

Recently at the second Belt and Road conference on scientific and technological exchanges, Robin Zeng, the Chairman and CEO of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), delivered a powerful speech setting forth his vision for a world that prioritizes carbon neutrality. Zeng emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts across various sectors, aiming for a mutually beneficial development that empowers emerging economies.

In his address, Zeng highlighted CATL's readiness to engage in deep industrial cooperation and share its cutting-edge technologies to accelerate the global energy transition. He stated, “There are numerous ways in which we can cooperate. CATL is prepared to co-build factories, form joint ventures, and establish technology licensing agreements.” This collaborative spirit stands at the heart of CATL's strategy to foster localized ecosystems that can support partners worldwide in their quests for carbon neutrality.

Electrification of Transportation

Zeng pointed out the significant opportunities in the electrification of transportation, particularly in emerging markets like Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. CATL is actively pursuing partnerships in these regions. For instance, its collaboration with Arun Plus in Thailand aims to supply batteries as the country seeks to become the hub of electric vehicles (EV) in Southeast Asia. Simultaneously, CATL is co-developing a comprehensive industrial value chain in Indonesia, focusing on everything from mining to recycling, to localize the EV ecosystem.

Beyond transportation, CATL is spearheading initiatives in zero-carbon technology, which include innovative energy storage systems critical for harnessing renewable energy. Their storage systems can create independent microgrids vital for remote areas and industrial sites. A notable instance is the 19 GWh battery storage system powering Masdar's green 'AI + Zero-Carbon' data center in the UAE.

To further enhance the circularity of batteries within society, CATL has ambitious plans to deploy 1,000 Choco-Swap stations by 2025. Their operations extend to Hong Kong and Macao, with the first Choco-Swap station in Hong Kong currently under construction. The company aims to establish a total of 10,000 stations in collaboration with automotive industry partners in the medium term. Additionally, CATL's advanced battery recycling technology processed 130,000 tons of battery waste last year, illustrating its strong commitment to a circular economy.

Industrial Decarbonization

During his speech, Zeng also discussed the concept of industrial decarbonization, defining it as transforming traditional energy-intensive industries with new energy solutions such as hydrometallurgy to reduce carbon emissions. This strategy, coupled with the 'industrialization of new energies,' seeks to create new economic growth drivers and sustainable transformation pathways, particularly beneficial for countries aiming to modernize their industries.

CATL's global production network strategy is designed to ensure the supply and market development worldwide. Major investments in European production, including the largest battery facility in Hungary and a new factory in Spain in partnership with Stellantis, reflect this intent. These initiatives integrate CATL into the regional new energy industrial chains sustainably, enhancing local value and technological progress.

Holding over 43,000 patents and investing close to 20 billion yuan annually in battery research and development, CATL continues to lead in innovations related to battery materials, systems, and beyond. In 2024, CATL ranked second among all Chinese companies for overseas patent applications.

As a global leader in innovation and technology, Zeng expressed CATL's eagerness to collaborate with businesses and scientific communities across partner countries. “We look forward to contributing to new energies, sustainable development for humanity, and building a community with a shared future for all,” he concluded.

CATL's recent listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange further signifies its deeper integration into global financial markets, providing a crucial platform to support the expansion of its production capacity, supplier network, and talent pool. The company aims for its facilities to achieve carbon neutrality this year, with a commitment to reaching carbon neutrality across its entire battery supply chain by 2035.
