Celebrating the Launch of Domestic SAF at Haneda Airport
On July 7, a notable event took place at Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) to celebrate the commencement of domestic Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supply. This event was organized by Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., a subsidiary of Cosmo Energy Holdings Co., led by President Naoki Takayama. The supply of domestic SAF, produced from waste cooking oil by SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY, was officially announced, marking an important milestone for the aviation industry in Japan.
The waste cooking oil, sourced through a collaboration between the Fry to Fly Project—of which Cosmo Energy is a member—and Tokyo Metropolitan Government, underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. In this initiative, Cosmo Oil Marketing Co. has been selected as the first company to be adopted under the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's project aimed at promoting the utilization of domestic SAF, enhancing Haneda's international competitiveness.
The event featured important figures, including President Takayama of Cosmo Oil Marketing, alongside Shinichi Inoue, President of All Nippon Airways, Yuriko Koike, Governor of Tokyo, Masayuki Sato, Chairman and CEO of JGC Holdings, and Yuji Akasaki, Chairman of Japan Airlines. This gathering highlighted the collaborative efforts towards making aviation more sustainable through the use of SAF.
Cosmo Energy Group is dedicated to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and has been actively working to establish a robust supply chain for domestic SAF. In line with this goal, the company is also pursuing ongoing citizen collection campaigns at service stations, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in promoting understanding and enthusiasm for sustainable practices.
The SAF recently supplied represents a pioneering project supported by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) through its initiative to build a supply chain model for SAF made from domestically sourced waste cooking oil. This newly produced domestic SAF is significant as it is set to be the country’s first large-scale production of aircraft fuel from these sustainable sources.
The SAF has successfully obtained international certification including ISCC CORSIA and ISCC EU, further validating its environmental value. The production of this SAF is managed by SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY, a company jointly established by Cosmo Oil, JGC Holdings, and Rev International, which aims to supply airlines starting from the fiscal year 2025.
In addition to fueling commercial flights, this initiative is aligned with broader societal goals of decarbonization and resource circulation. Cosmo Energy Group recognizes the pressing need to address environmental challenges and is committed to ensuring that the use of SAF becomes a standard practice across the aviation sector.
The launch of this SAF supply is not just a victory for the companies involved but a comprehensive step forward for Japan in fostering sustainable energy solutions. As the aviation industry continues to evolve, the responsibilities shared among governments, businesses, and citizens will be crucial in realizing a sustainable future for air travel.
The integration of SAF into daily operations will inevitably play a significant role in reducing the carbon footprint associated with air travel, thus contributing effectively towards achieving a more sustainable society. Cosmo Energy Group looks forward to the ongoing support and collaboration from all sectors to drive these vital initiatives further.
