Exploring the Interconnection Between Food and Energy: An Online Event by Pal System

On November 8, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM, Pal System Cooperative (Headquarters: Okubo, Shinjuku) will hold an online event titled "EnerMiratalk: Food and Energy—Seeing the Invisible Connections." This initiative aims to delve into sustainable energy options that are friendly to our planet by examining their relevance to food production and supply. The talk will feature three guest speakers from various backgrounds including a shiitake mushroom producer and renewable energy experts, facilitating engaging discussions with participants.

The theme of the event is focused on the essential energy required for food production and transportation, making it a relatable issue for everyone. Current reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear energy in the agricultural industry exacerbates the troubles caused by climate change, thus indicating a need to rethink our energy procurement systems.

One key speaker is Atsuhiko Iizumi, a shiitake mushroom producer from Tsukuba City in Ibaraki Prefecture. As the chairman of JA Tsukuba City Yatabe, he will share his experiences of adversity following the nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi, which led to a temporary halt in shipments and ongoing reputational damage even after operations resumed.

Seiya Miyake, the President of the Renewable Energy Promotion Organization based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, will discuss the true value of renewable energy. He will provide insights regarding both domestic and global energy landscapes and will highlight challenges present in Japan's current energy policies.

Additionally, Noriko Todoroki from the environmental NGO FoE Japan will join the discussion, focusing on domestic climate action initiatives. She will address topics such as renewable energy supply strategies, environmental conservation, and future directions for sustainability.
