ASPCA's Ongoing Battle Against Dogfighting: Over 150 Dogs Rescued in South Carolina

ASPCA’s Ongoing Efforts to Combat Dogfighting

On April 8, observed as National Dogfighting Awareness Day, the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has amplified its message against the brutality of dogfighting. This year, the organization has persuaded many communities and law enforcement groups to take action, culminating in the rescue of nearly 350 dogs identified as victims of dogfighting across the United States. Most recently, over 150 dogs were rescued from suspected dogfighting operations in South Carolina, showcasing a collaborative effort between the ASPCA and local law enforcement.

In the past week, a coordinated effort saw the ASPCA work hand in hand with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to rescue these vulnerable dogs, many of whom arrived with untreated injuries and scars, indicative of their harsh treatment in the dogfighting arena. Following their rescue, these dogs were immediately placed in the care of the ASPCA, where they are receiving critical medical attention and rehabilitation.

This recent operation is just one of seven cases the ASPCA has been involved with over the past year. Other notable rescues include:
  • - A significant bust in March 2025, where multiple dogs and puppies were rescued from a property in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
  • - In August 2024, over 100 dogs were rescued in a similar effort in Pinellas County, Florida.
  • - Numerous collaborative initiatives across South Carolina have seen the execution of search warrants aimed at disrupting dogfighting networks.

Matt Bershadker, president and CEO of the ASPCA, expressed concern about the continued prevalence of dogfighting, despite its classification as a felony nationwide. He stated, "The horrific act of dogfighting still occurs all over the country, and the ASPCA is dedicated to putting an end to this cruel suffering that impacts thousands of vulnerable animals at any given moment with an unwavering commitment to justice for these victims."

In addition to active rescue operations, the ASPCA provides crucial support to law enforcement agencies through forensic investigations, legal assistance, and critical training sessions aimed at enhancing the capabilities of law enforcement to combat dogfighting. Earlier this year, an intensive workshop in North Carolina attracted over 50 prosecutors, veterinarians, and animal welfare professionals dedicated to fighting this issue.

The ASPCA also invites animal advocates and the general public to learn how to recognize the signs of dogfighting and encourages them to report any suspected cruelty. More resources can be found on their website at aspca.org/fightcruelty.

As the nation commemorates National Dogfighting Awareness Day, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against animal cruelty and the importance of community involvement. The ASPCA remains a vital force in the fight against this brutal practice, advocating for the rescue and rehabilitation of dogs caught in the horrific world of dogfighting. Through its initiatives, the ASPCA is not only rescuing lives but also spearheading critical education and advocacy efforts aimed at fostering a compassionate future for all animals.
