North Carolina's Wounded Heroes Day Celebrated in Washington, DC, Honoring Our Brave Veterans
Celebrating North Carolina's Wounded Heroes Day
On April 21, 2025, the National non-profit, The Independence Fund, is set to honor the brave men and women who have sacrificed for their country at the 5th Annual Wounded Heroes Day in Washington, D.C. This event is a significant tribute to veterans from North Carolina and beyond, acknowledging their courage, resilience, and their families' support.
As part of this heartfelt event, wounded heroes have been invited to join elected officials and prominent military figures to participate in a solemn ceremony. Notable speakers for the event include Veteran and bestselling author Nick Palmisciano, Green Beret Tim Kennedy, and Navy SEAL Andy Stumpf, all of whom will share their unique stories and experiences.
The Independence Fund aims to provide these veterans and their families with an enriching experience in the nation’s capital, where they can engage with officials and enjoy various local activities. This initiative not only highlights the sacrifices made by these heroes but also fosters a sense of community and support.
A Legacy of Honor
Since 2021, April 24 has been recognized as Wounded Heroes Day by the State of North Carolina, marking the day as a symbol of remembrance for the state’s many wounded veterans. This day is particularly meaningful as it commemorates U.S. Army Veteran SGT Michael Verardo, who suffered life-altering injuries from an IED explosion in Afghanistan on April 24, 2010. His journey, filled with incredible challenges, has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for many.
SGT Verardo has undergone an astounding 120 surgeries since his traumatic injury, reflecting the significant struggles faced by many veterans as they navigate life after war. His undeterred spirit and relentless determination have made him a symbol of resilience, making this day a time to honor not just his journey but all veterans who have faced similar obstacles.
The establishment of Wounded Heroes Day, facilitated by House Bill 138/Senate Bill 132, emphasizes North Carolina's commitment to recognizing and supporting servicemembers returning home with injuries. It serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made in service of the country and acknowledges the ongoing struggles veterans encounter.
