South Los Angeles Entrepreneur Wins $25,000 Grand Prize at VSEDC's Inaugural Grand Pitch Competition

Empowering Entrepreneurs in South Los Angeles

On November 9, 2024, the Vermont Slauson Economic Development Corporation (VSEDC) hosted its inaugural Grand Pitch Competition at Centrl Office in El Segundo, California. This event aimed to connect local entrepreneurs in South Los Angeles with the necessary capital to thrive. All Chill Ice Cream, led by co-owner Genelle Brooks-Petty, emerged victorious by securing a $25,000 Grand Prize, which symbolizes a powerful opportunity for small business owners in the region.

VSEDC's pitch competition was more than just a contest; it was a vibrant platform where aspiring entrepreneurs showcased their innovative ideas and business plans before a panel of celebrity judges and industry experts. Competitors were handpicked from a pool of 40 candidates who had participated in VSEDC's training programs in the preceding two years. This initiative reflects VSEDC's commitment to fostering a supportive business ecosystem for traditionally underserved Black entrepreneurs, allowing them to present their visions and gain access to crucial funding resources.

Quentin Strode, President and CEO of VSEDC, expressed enthusiasm about the participation of numerous businesses in the program. He stated, “I'm excited about the number of individuals who have gone through our business training at Vermont Slauson to qualify as applicants for the pitch competition. I hope this event opens doors for our businesses both this year and in the future.”

The statistics around entrepreneurship among people of color expose significant disparities, particularly for Black individuals seeking capital to launch or grow their ventures. In addressing these challenges, VSEDC offers a range of supportive services including free business coaching, ongoing training sessions, workshops, and access to affordable loans. This structured support system is designed to guide entrepreneurs at every stage of their development.

Apart from the Grand Prize, the competition also recognized outstanding contributors with a $15,000 Second Place prize awarded to IGL Nails and a $10,000 Third Place prize for Liberated Eyewear, Inc. Each winner was able to articulate their business plans effectively, presenting innovative solutions that addressed the market's needs.

Genelle Brooks-Petty, the co-owner of All Chill Ice Cream, shared her gratitude and excitement upon winning the Grand Prize. She mentioned, “Winning this prize allows us to upgrade our equipment. We can double our production with the same team that we have, thanks to this prize.” Such a win not only bolsters her business but also serves as inspiration for other entrepreneurs aiming for similar success.

The event was supported by prominent sponsors including First Citizens Bank, Citi, and Comerica, who provided invaluable backing and resources to ensure the competition's success. Judges from diverse backgrounds, including traditional lending institutions and successful investors, provided direct feedback and guidance to participants, emphasizing the constructive nature of the competition.

VSEDC’s mission is to develop thriving communities in South Los Angeles by revitalizing the local economy through entrepreneurship. “This is just the beginning of something magical for South LA,” said Strode. The organization aims to expand its awards in the future, ensuring that emerging entrepreneurs receive the recognition and support they deserve.

From community-centered ventures like All Chill Ice Cream to innovative nail salons and eyewear companies, the competition highlighted the wealth of creativity and potential within South Los Angeles. VSEDC’s efforts demonstrate that with the right platform and support, local entrepreneurs can achieve great heights and contribute actively to the economic fabric of their communities.
