Second Symposium on Creative Reconstruction in Wakura Onsen Planned for February 2026

Second Wakura Onsen Creative Reconstruction Symposium Scheduled

On February 19, 2026, the Wakura Onsen Creative Reconstruction Council will host the second edition of the Creative Reconstruction Symposium at Station Conference Tokyo in Chiyoda, Tokyo. Led by Kentaro Tada, the president of Tadayasu, this event marks a significant step toward revitalizing the area two years following the earthquake disaster. During the symposium, a new company, Wakurasu Co., Ltd., will be introduced, which will play a pivotal role in coordinating recovery efforts, alongside presentations about three pilot areas already in the early phases of revitalization.

The latter half of the symposium will feature an interactive session, allowing attendees to actively participate in discussions on the formation of a business consortium designed to tackle regional challenges collaboratively. This event is set to transform participants from mere attendees to key players, emphasizing a collaborative spirit crucial for the region’s recovery.

Background of the Event: Shifting from Concepts to Action

As of March 2025, following a year since the disaster, Wakura Onsen has moved from planning to execution in its recovery efforts. With a focus on ‘creative reconstruction’, a strategic plan has been developed that integrates public and private sectors, inviting diverse ideas and actions from private enterprises. The official announcement of the reconstruction plan took place in March 2025 at a symposium in Tokyo's Yaesu, where government agencies, businesses, and local organizations engaged in thoughtful discourse about the framework for recovery.

In the year since the initial gathering, many participating companies have begun to initiate specific collaborative projects, turning this event into a platform for deepening partnerships aimed at recovery. The upcoming symposium not only seeks to strategize for the future establishment of a business consortium but also aims to foster dynamic relationships among partners committed to confronting local challenges together. This opportunity will transcend the traditional buyer-supplier dynamics, prompting organizations to jointly handle responsibilities from consensus-building to execution.

Local Engagement and Six Recovery Project Teams

The Wakura Onsen Creative Reconstruction Council is currently pursuing six distinct projects, aimed at bringing the recovery plan into reality. These projects consist of teams made up of local leaders and experts from various fields including major insurance firms, comprehensive construction consultants, local utility companies, and travel businesses. Collaborative efforts are already underway, engaging in experiments and planning strategies to revitalize the region.

Details of these projects can be found in the reconstruction plan published in March 2025:
