Los Angeles, September 16, 2026 – La Opinión, the premier Spanish-language daily newspaper in the United States and a cornerstone of the Latino community, proudly celebrates its centennial anniversary. This landmark occasion is marked by the launch of Somos L.A. Columna, an innovative editorial platform dedicated to giving everyday Angelenos a chance to share their experiences and stories that reflect the vibrant tapestry of Los Angeles.

Founded on September 16, 1926, by Ignacio E. Lozano Sr., La Opinión not only chronicles the rich history of the city but also actively participates in shaping its narrative. To commemorate its 100th year, the newspaper has decided to shift its traditional editorial strategy by inviting readers from diverse backgrounds—community leaders, artists, activists, and everyday citizens—to contribute to its opinion pages. Each contributor will share their unique perspective in a concise 100-word column, which will be featured in print, online, and across La Opinión's social media channels.

La Opinión's new initiative, Somos L.A. Columna, is a reaffirmation of its commitment to the community it serves. It emphasizes the importance of listening to the voices of those who live in Los Angeles, allowing them to share their stories in their own words. This initiative not only enhances community engagement but also honors the legacy of Lozano, who established the paper as a trusted source of news during a time when representation was scarce.

The site aims to connect past reporting with current contributions from community members, emphasizing the evolution of Los Angeles over the past century.
Additionally, a powerful manifesto video will run across La Opinión’s various digital platforms, celebrating a legacy of participation and resilience. It reaffirms the sentiment that “We don’t just witness history. We write it together,” underscoring the importance of collective storytelling.

Furthermore, La Opinión's founding site, located at 302 N. Los Angeles Street, has been recognized by the City of Los Angeles as a significant landmark in its Latino heritage. As part of the HistoricPlacesLA Revealed Latino Los Angeles initiative, a physical marker will be installed at this site, connecting past and present through digital and physical storytelling.

Throughout its 100-year history, La Opinión has covered significant events in the community, from the Zoot Suit Riots to documenting changes across generations. The launch of Somos L.A. Columna represents a continuum of this tradition as it extends the narrative responsibility to the residents themselves.
