Dr. Sousa currently serves as the Dean of the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University (MSU), one of the country’s prominent community-focused medical schools. Over his impressive 30-year tenure at MSU, he has been instrumental in implementing transformative initiatives in medical education, research, and community health. His leadership facilitated the expansion of clinical and community campuses throughout Michigan, enhancing access to medical education and fortifying partnerships with local health systems and communities.

Among his notable achievements is his work involving the Flint community. As the principal investigator on a $37 million grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Dr. Sousa played a crucial role in establishing a downtown campus, augmenting public health research, and creating the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health. These efforts have attracted over $200 million in external funding to the area, significantly boosting research on critical issues such as mental health, poverty, nutrition, and the adverse effects of lead exposure following the city’s water crisis.
