NorthStar and QSA Global Form Strategic Partnership for Enhanced Actinium-225 Supply Chain

Strengthening the Supply Chain for Actinium-225: A Strategic Alliance

In a significant move within the radiopharmaceutical industry, NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes, LLC and QSA Global, Inc. have established a multi-year strategic partnership. This collaboration aims to enhance the supply chain for Actinium-225 (Ac-225), an essential material used in targeted alpha therapies (TAT), thereby solidifying NorthStar’s position as a leading provider in this critical field. This partnership brings together two industry leaders: QSA Global, recognized for its specialized radioactive source manufacturing and management, and NorthStar, known for its innovative strides in commercial radiopharmaceutical production.

A Reliable Supply of Radium-226 Targets

The agreement focuses on the critical component of the Ac-225 supply chain, Radium-226 (Ra-226). QSA Global will support NorthStar by offering a closed-loop source for high-purity Ra-226 target materials. This will benefit NorthStar's commercial production of carrier-added (n.c.a.) Ac-225, ensuring a steady and reliable supply chain crucial for meeting the increasing demand for TATs.

Dr. Frank Scholz, President and CEO of NorthStar, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "This multi-year agreement with QSA Global strengthens our supply chain with a reliable, high-quality source of Ra-226 targets vital for our n.c.a. Ac-225 production capabilities. By ensuring ongoing access to these essential materials, we can confidently meet the increasing demand within the industry."

Leveraging Expertise for Advanced Treatment Solutions

The partnership leverages QSA Global's decades of experience in handling high-activity radioactive materials alongside NorthStar's innovative approach to radiopharmaceutical production. It includes a multi-year decontamination campaign where QSA Global will recycle old Ra-226, transforming it into high-purity precursors to be used for producing target capsules continuously. Once the Ra-226 has been irradiated and processed by NorthStar to create n.c.a. Ac-225, the recycled Radium will be returned to QSA Global for transformation back into new targets, promoting efficiency and sustainability in the supply chain.

As Dr. Joe Lapinskas, Innovations Director at QSA Global, pointed out, "By managing the intricate, highly regulated lifecycle of Radium-226, we enable partners like NorthStar to focus entirely on the commercial production of Actinium-225. NorthStar has been a pivotal partner in developing our specialized radium services, and we are proud to utilize our decades of experience in handling high-radioactive materials to secure this critical supply chain for NorthStar, ultimately contributing to life-saving TATs for patients."

Importance of Actinium-225 in Cancer Therapies

Ac-225 is notable for its role as a potent emitter of alpha radiation that can effectively target and destroy cancer cells. NorthStar is pioneering the use of n.c.a. Ac-225, produced using an indirect synthesis method, involving electron beam irradiation of Ra-226 targets. This innovative technique continually reminds us of the versatility of Ac-225, which can attach to various target molecules like antibodies, peptides, and small molecules, allowing precision treatment applications in oncology. The attributes of Ac-225 are instrumental in developing a new generation of radiopharmaceutical therapies that are not only highly effective but also selective.

Companies Leading the Charge in Radiopharmaceuticals

QSA Global, Inc. stands as a global leader in the development, fabrication, and distribution of high-performance radiation sources and devices. With years of experience catering to industrial radioisotope products, QSA Global has strategically adapted to serve the growing market for medical radioisotopes and targeted alpha therapy, ensuring supply chain security for next-generation life-saving medical treatments.

NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes is at the forefront of radiopharmaceutical innovation, utilizing novel techniques for large-scale isotope production. Their sophistication in handling radioisotope production and their demonstrated commitment to improving patient care solidify their status in the rapidly evolving field of radiopharmaceutical therapy. In addition to Cu-67, NorthStar proudly claims the distinction of being the first commercial manufacturer of Ac-225 without carrier addition, utilizing advanced electron accelerator technology.

The depth of expertise provided by both companies through this partnership stands to benefit the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors significantly, propelling advancements in effective cancer treatments and positioning Ac-225 as a cornerstone in the future of medicine.
