Broward Sheriff's Council and Local Police Spread Cheer at Holiday Shop with a Cop Event
In a heartwarming initiative, the Broward Sheriff's Advisory Council (BSAC) has partnered with several local law enforcement agencies to host the highly anticipated Holiday Shop with a Cop event. This yearly gathering, which took place on December 6, 2025, at the Target store in Fort Lauderdale, aimed to bring joy and festive spirit to more than 100 children from the area.
This collaborative effort involved members from the BSAC alongside officers from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, Lauderhill Police Department, Pembroke Pines Police Department, and the Florida Highway Patrol, all coming together to foster a sense of community trust during the holiday season.
An Exciting Shopping Experience
On the day of the event, selected children were greeted early in the morning before the store's doors opened. Each child was paired with a law enforcement officer for a personalized shopping experience. Participants were given a generous $200 shopping spree, made possible through the contributions of local businesses like Target, which also provided toiletry bags for every child. This arrangement allowed them to choose gifts for themselves and their families, creating lasting memories.
In addition to shopping, the event introduced a festive twist with the ‘Lights & Sirens’ competition. Police patrol vehicles were decorated in holiday themes, competing for the title of best-decorated vehicle. This light-hearted competition served not only to emphasize teamwork among the agencies but also to delight the families and children attending. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department took top honors, while the Lauderhill and Pembroke Pines police departments followed closely behind, showcasing their creativity and holiday spirit.
Spreading the True Meaning of the Holidays
Valerie Silverman, Executive Director of BSAC, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to bring joy to children's lives, emphasizing that Shop with a Cop reinforces the message that these kids are valued and supported by their community's service members. “These moments matter, and they stay with children long after the holidays are over,” she noted, illustrating the profound impact such events can have on young lives.
Furthermore, the event featured a touching tree lighting ceremony, where each child received a personalized ornament representing their name, symbolizing unity and community belongingness. Andy Mitchell, Chairman of the Board for BSAC, echoed Silverman's sentiments, highlighting the importance of collaboration among law enforcement agencies to foster a spirit of community policing that truly resonates with the residents.

The Shop with a Cop event is just one of the many initiatives spearheaded by BSAC, designed to strengthen the bond between first responders and the diverse communities they serve.
