Families on the Fly: Enhancing Family Travels
In a bid to bolster the travel experience for families at airports, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched the
'Families on the Fly' campaign. Announced by Secretary Noem, this initiative is designed to create smoother and more pleasant security screenings, particularly during the busy summer travel season.
The Motivation Behind the Initiative
Traveling with children can often be a challenging endeavor, especially when navigating airport security. Recognizing this, the DHS and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are committed to easing these hurdles.
Adam Stahl, acting Deputy TSA Administrator, emphasized the commitment to minimizing stress for families while upholding top-notch security standards.
Features of the Families on the Fly Campaign
The
'Families on the Fly' initiative presents several advantages tailored specifically for families:
- - Dedicated Family Lanes: Select airports across the nation will feature exclusive lanes for families, allowing them to bypass long lines typically associated with airport security.
- - Discounted TSA PreCheck® Fees: Families will soon have the opportunity to access reduced fees for TSA PreCheck, expediting their screening process.
- - Service Member Inclusivity: The program also extends dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes for military families, acknowledging their service and sacrifices.
Currently, notable participating airports include
Orlando International (MCO) and
Charlotte-Douglas International (CLT). The initiative is set to expand to major airports like
John Wayne Orange County Airport (SNA) and
Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), with additional locations in the pipeline.
With
Charleston International (CHS),
Jacksonville International (JAX),
T.F. Green International (PVD),
Luis Muñoz Marín International (SJU), and
Tampa International (TPA) also participating, the initiative aims to improve the overall travel experience for families.
TSA's Broader Commitment
This campaign is part of TSA's wider efforts to enhance hospitality across all 435 U.S. airports. Earlier this summer, TSA introduced the
'Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease' program to honor military service members and their families, providing expedited screening for those in the military.
Military personnel and their families are eligible for free TSA PreCheck when using their Department of Defense (DOD) ID number as their Known Traveler Number, with children 12 and under allowed to accompany them without restrictions. Older minors (13-17) must be on the same flight reservation with a TSA PreCheck-eligible adult.
Moreover, the
TSA Cares program provides tailored assistance for veterans and wounded warriors, ensuring they have a dignified experience as they go through security. This dedicated support offers personalized help throughout the screening process.
Preparing for Summer Travel
In light of the bustling summer travel period, the TSA urges all passengers to get ready for their airport security screenings ahead of time. Families can visit the TSA website for further guidance and tips to streamline their travel experience.
Ultimately, the
'Families on the Fly' campaign represents a pivotal step toward prioritizing the needs of family travelers. By providing dedicated lanes, cost-effective options, and assistance specific to military families, TSA is taking significant strides in making airport journeys for families less stressful and more enjoyable. With this effort, families can look forward to smoother travels and more memorable vacations ahead.
