In a significant move for the insurance sector, the Hokan Group, headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, has announced the commencement of the INID 2026 (Insurance Ideathon). Starting from March 2, 2026, Japanese university and graduate students will have the opportunity to showcase their innovative insurance ideas in a competition designed to inspire the next generation of industry leaders.

Purpose of INID 2026

The main objective of the INID 2026 competition is to foster a culture of innovation within the insurance industry by encouraging students to think freely and creatively. This initiative seeks to contribute to the overall growth and evolution of the sector. As part of the competition, the winning team will earn a coveted spot at the global finals in Singapore, scheduled for August 2026.

The 2025 competition saw a vibrant display of creativity, with the team from Keio University clinching the top prize for their unique proposal centered around the metaverse. Their achievement led them to earn recognition with the prestigious Kojima Saburo Award, celebrating outstanding academic contributions in the business field.

Support and Accessibility for Participants

This year, the organizing committee has made strides to ensure that all eligible students across Japan can participate without financial constraints. Participants in the domestic finals will receive transportation subsidies, particularly aiding those traveling from distant regions. Additionally, the committee will cover the travel and accommodation expenses for the winning team heading to Singapore, enabling equal access to this global platform for all students.

The event's timeline is as follows:
  • - Entry Period: March 2 - April 6, 2026
  • - First Round Results Announcement: April 30, 2026
  • - Domestic Finals: May 30, 2026
  • - Global Finals in Singapore: August 21, 2026

Call for Support

In a bid to strengthen industry-academic collaboration, the organizing committee also seeks sponsors and supporters, including judges and mentors. They welcome businesses and professionals in the insurance field to join and create a collaborative environment that empowers students.

Reward Structure

The competition offers exciting prizes:
  • - Grand Prize: ¥200,000 and a slot for the Singapore finals.
  • - Excellence Prize: ¥100,000 and other awards to recognize exceptional contributions.

Additionally, the jury members will be announced later on the dedicated website: Official INID 2026 Site.

Reflections on Previous Competitions

The inaugural INID competition in 2025 attracted 23 teams, presenting innovative ideas spanning themes like agriculture and insurance, cyber insurance, and game education. The winning team’s proposal on creating a new era of insurance that transcends borders was highly praised on an international scale.

Participants experienced not only the thrill of competition but also gained valuable insights into the global standards of insurance innovation. The prior event served as a reminder of the importance placed on feasibility alongside creative thinking in today's insurance landscape.

A Message from CIEN’s Executive Director

Keiko Maibayashi, Executive Director at CIEN, emphasized that INID is more than just a business contest. It stands as a meeting point for fresh student ideas intersecting with the expertise of industry professionals and academic insights. She expressed excitement at the prospect of collaborating with eager participants keen to redefine the insurance landscape.
