The 11th Chikuma River Half Marathon is set to take place on November 23, 2025, along the scenic banks of the Chikuma River in Nagano Prefecture. This event aims to capture the essence of the stunning late autumn landscape of Shinshu and is open for entry starting tomorrow, July 25, 2023. This year’s marathon will once again feature the esteemed presence of Naoko Kodaira, an Olympic gold medalist from Nagano, who will add glamour to the event.

The race includes a leisurely course primarily focusing on the banks of the Chikuma River, ensuring a relaxing experience. The Half Marathon accommodates up to 1,600 participants, while the Family Marathon allows for 100 groups (200 participants) on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration fees are 6,000 yen for the Half Marathon and 3,000 yen for the Family Marathon (4,500 yen for three members).

Course Highlights
The marathon course is designed for beginners, featuring minimal elevation changes, making it an excellent opportunity to achieve personal bests. Participants will be treated to breathtaking views of the terraced rice fields of Obasute, recognized as a Japanese Heritage site, as well as stunning sights from Mt. Kankitsu (also known as Obasute Mountain) and the expansive Chikuma River.
Post-Race Delights
After the race, participants can enjoy special treats made with rice harvested from Obasute, including rice balls and warm tonjiru (pork miso soup). Additionally, runners will receive a complimentary bathing ticket to the renowned Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, famous for its high-quality waters known for beautifying skin. It’s an excellent chance to relax and rejuvenate after a year’s worth of competitions.
Celebrated Guest
We are thrilled to announce that Naoko Kodaira will be the special guest this year. Known for winning the first-ever gold medal for Japanese women's speed skating in the 500m at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, she continues to inspire many.
Naoko Kodaira was born in Chino City, Nagano, and began skating at the tender age of 3. She trained under Coach Masahiro Yuki while attending Shinshu University. After graduating, she joined Aizawa Hospital in 2009. In addition to her golden victory in the 500m, she also claimed silver in the 1000m, achieving remarkable records, including 37 consecutive wins in various competitions internationally. Retiring in 2022 after winning the 500m at the All Japan Distance Championships, she now serves as the brand ambassador for Aizawa Hospital, connecting with people and communities.
