Shanghai Electric made a significant impact at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) 2026, held in Abu Dhabi. Presenting under the theme "The Strength of Integration," this event featured innovative energy solutions aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by the Middle East. As a region endowed with abundant oil and gas resources, the Middle East also grapples with water scarcity and an urgent need for energy transition. Shanghai Electric's comprehensive offerings include solar energy, desalination, hybrid energy storage, hydrogen solutions, and green fuels, underscoring its commitment to fostering a resilient and sustainable energy ecosystem.
Addressing Regional Challenges
The Middle East is at a crossroads, balancing its wealth of fossil fuel resources with the pressing demand for sustainable alternatives. WFES 2026 stands as a premier platform, bringing together global policymakers, industry leaders, and technology innovators to discuss and promote energy transformation strategies. According to Zhu Weiwen, Deputy Director of Marketing at Shanghai Electric Power Generation Group, the energy transition involves not just the integration of various technologies, but a systemic commitment. "Shanghai Electric acts as a system integrator, perceiving the integration of high-penetration renewable energy sources, grid stability, green fuel production, and industrial decarbonization as interconnected components necessary for delivering actionable transitional pathways to our Middle Eastern customers," he explains.
Innovative Energy Solutions on Display
Visitors to Shanghai Electric's exhibit at WFES were immersed in an engaging design that showcased four integrated solution zones reflecting the entire energy value chain. The first zone, Integrated Solar and Water Energy, highlighted reference projects like the Dubai solar park, showcasing how concentrated solar power (CSP) and photovoltaic (PV) energy storage can deliver 24-hour electricity supply. This zone also featured Shanghai Electric's capabilities in seawater desalination, utilizing advanced technologies such as Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) and Reverse Osmosis (RO).
The second solution zone focused on Grid Support and Hybrid Energy Storage, emphasizing network stability in high-renewable penetration contexts. Shanghai Electric presented its energy storage and synchronous condenser solutions, which provide critical support for inertia and rapid frequency regulation—having been deployed in projects such as the Penasco photovoltaic plant in Mexico.
In the Power-to-X and Hydrogen Energy zone, the company showcased its Bristack® series electrolyzers, renowned for their industry-leading energy consumption efficiency, and discussed the demonstrative Taonan Green Methanol project in China's Jilin province. This project integrates hydrogen produced from wind energy with biomass-based green methanol production, receiving full EU ISCC certification. The final zone displayed solutions for Zero-Carbon Industrial Parks, illustrating how high-energy-consuming industrial sites can achieve low-carbon transformation through synergies with highly efficient industrial turbines and intelligent energy management systems.
Every solution presented by Shanghai Electric is backed by proven project implementation. Highlights include the 2 GW PV project at AI Sadawi in Saudi Arabia, the Safi seawater desalination project in Morocco, the Pančevo gas power plant in Serbia, and the Taonan Green Methanol project in China. These diverse projects not only illustrate Shanghai Electric's capability to deliver integrated energy systems but also emphasize their adaptability across a range of regional scenarios.
