Cambrex, Snapdragon Chemistry and Q1 Scientific Set New Standards for Innovation and Sustainability in Pharma Industry

Cambrex and Its Commitment to Sustainable Innovation in Pharmaceuticals

In a major recognition of excellence and commitment to sustainability, Cambrex, a leading global contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), has recently garnered attention for its innovative strides in the pharmaceutical sector. The company announced that its subsidiary, Snapdragon Chemistry, alongside NewAmsterdam Pharma, was honored with the Green Chemistry Challenge Award 2026 by the American Chemical Society. This prestigious accolade highlights the successful development of a more environmentally friendly synthesis route for pharmaceutical production.

Snapdragon Chemistry's initiative to create an organocatalytic process for the chiral core of tetrahydroquinoline—a vital intermediate in the synthesis of obicetrapib, an experimental drug for dyslipidemia—has demonstrated remarkable advancements in efficiency and sustainability. The awarded process boasts improvements that include an approximate 80% reduction in mass intensity, the elimination of aqueous waste production, a 70% decrease in manufacturing cycle time, and a substantial 50% reduction in production costs. These improvements not only enhance the sustainability of pharmaceutical manufacturing but also facilitate greater output, ensuring a more responsible approach in drug development.

Cambrex's Sustainable Practices Take Center Stage

Building on this success, Cambrex’s facility in Milan has achieved a Gold rating from EcoVadis, ranking it among the top 5% of organizations evaluated for environmental, social, and ethical performance. This recognition underscores Cambrex's overarching sustainability strategy, which aims for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across the board, with an ambitious target of cutting emissions by 50% by the year 2030.

Complementing these initiatives, Q1 Scientific, another arm of Cambrex, has partnered with Flogas to secure renewable electricity through a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA). This collaboration is set to fulfill approximately 50% of the energy needs at Q1 Scientific's Waterford facility, reinforcing both client and community environmental goals and establishing Cambrex as a responsible leader within the sector.

According to Thomas Loewald, CEO of Cambrex, "At Cambrex, we are relentlessly committed to reducing our environmental impact for the benefit of our communities while ensuring sustainable manufacturing solutions for our clients."

The Broader Impact of Cambrex

Cambrex not only excels in sustainability but is also renowned for its extensive portfolio in drug development and manufacturing services, leveraging more than 45 years of experience in the industry. With a workforce of over 2,000 experts serving clients globally in North America and Europe, Cambrex offers specialized services in active pharmaceutical ingredients, continuous flow production, controlled substances, peptide synthesis, solid-state science, biocatalysis, material characterization, complex compound synthesis, and highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPI).

As global demands for innovative pharmaceutical solutions rise, Cambrex continues to be at the forefront, setting benchmarks in both innovation and sustainability. The company’s commitment to environmentally responsible practices not only positions it as a leader in the industry but also contributes positively to the global movement towards greener manufacturing processes in pharmaceuticals.
