Compass Datacenters Invests in Wellness Space for Community Support in Hoffman Estates

Compass Datacenters Invests in New Wellness Space in Hoffman Estates

Compass Datacenters has announced a significant investment of $50,000 aimed at enhancing mental health services in Hoffman Estates. This funding will transform the current conference room and an adjoining office space at the Village of Hoffman Estates Health and Human Services (HHS) Department into a dedicated area for group therapy, workshops, and various community programs. This project marks an important milestone as it is the first purpose-built space for such initiatives within the department.

The renovation is designed to create a more inviting and calming environment, employing biophilic design principles to integrate elements of nature into the indoor space. This includes using natural materials, earthy color palettes, living plants, and maximizing natural light. A built-in water fountain is also part of the design, enhancing the room’s soothing atmosphere. Research suggests that these design choices can contribute to lower stress levels and foster a sense of psychological safety, making the new space conducive for therapeutic activities.

HHS plays a vital role in the community, serving approximately 115 residents monthly and providing around 4,600 hours of therapy each year through a sliding fee scale, with most clients paying between $5 and $20 per session. The new wellness room will also be available to the Village's roughly 260 employees, extending the same counseling and workshops that are offered to the public.

Previously, when the department needed to hold group sessions, they had to rearrange furniture in the conference room, often leading to a cramped and non-ideal setup. Now, with a dedicated space, the HHS will be able to host therapy groups more effectively, which managers believe is crucial for addressing the growing mental health needs amplified by social isolation during the pandemic.

Dr. Monica Saavedra, the Director of Health and Human Services, emphasized the importance of group programs, stating, "There is a big influx in people experiencing isolation and social isolation has real consequences for mental health at every age. Groups let us build community and they also allow people waiting for individual therapy to receive support sooner. We see friendships and support systems form in these groups."

The design process is led by Sanyokta Kapur, the Village's Director of Building and Code Enforcement, who brings a wealth of experience in healthcare architecture. The new space will feature engineered wood flooring, decorative wood ceilings, and a layout that allows flexibility for various uses, including group therapy and staff meetings. An artistic touch will include a compass piece symbolizing the support and guidance provided to individuals seeking direction in their lives.

This initiative aligns with Compass Datacenters' commitment to community welfare, exemplified by their 100-year neighbor philosophy. This approach reflects the company's dedication to the long-term well-being of the communities where they engage, particularly as they are in the early stages of developing a hyperscale campus on the former site of Sears in Hoffman Estates.

In conjunction with this announcement, the timing coincides with Mental Health Awareness Week. During this week, Compass Datacenters has been actively organizing mental health-related programs aimed at construction workers across its developing campuses, noting the alarming rates of suicide within the construction industry. The initiative serves to normalize discussions about mental health and encourages workers to seek help when needed.

Hoffman Estates' Health and Human Services Department has a rich history of over 45 years, initially starting as a volunteer-staffed drop-in center. Over time, it has evolved to meet the growing needs of the community, providing essential services that have become even more critical in recent years.

The room's construction is expected to be completed within six months without interrupting current services, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mayor Bill McLeod. As a unique addition to the project, Charlie, the department’s beloved chocolate Labrador therapy dog, has humorously been appointed as the honorary project manager and is documenting the progress on social media.

Mayor McLeod expressed gratitude towards Compass Datacenters, stating, "We truly appreciate their making a significant investment in the mental health wellness of our community, showcasing their commitment to giving back where they operate." This partnership not only enhances local mental health services but reflects a growing recognition of the importance of mental wellness in contemporary society.
