Mometu Launches Short Film Showdown to Boost Independent Filmmakers' Revenue

Mometu's Short Film Showdown Initiative



In a groundbreaking move for independent filmmakers, Mometu, a free ad-supported streaming platform, has recently unveiled its latest initiative: the Mometu Short Film Showdown. This innovative nine-month competition is designed specifically to extend the commercial viability of short films beyond their traditional festival circuits and provide a financial lifeline to creators by returning 100% of the competition-generated advertising revenue back to the filmmakers.

The Short Film Showdown stands out in the crowded landscape of film competitions by introducing a revenue-sharing model that aligns the interests of the filmmakers with audience engagement. As audiences connect with the curated films, the financial rewards flow back to the creators. Each month, the platform will feature up to 25 short films, organized by genre, streaming for a 30-day period on the Mometu app, available via Connected TVs, Smart TVs, and mobile devices.

Structure of the Competition



Monthly showcases will determine the films that resonate best with viewers, enabling winning entries to advance to a climactic finale in November featuring the top ten films. Unlike many traditional film competitions that offer fixed cash prizes, the Short Film Showdown is structured around a revenue-sharing model. In this format, 85% of the net advertising revenue generated from viewer interactions will be distributed as cash prizes among the top three finalists, utilizing a split of 60% for the first, 30% for the second, and 10% for the third place.

Moreover, an additional 15% of the revenue will be allocated to initiate a Short-to-Feature Development Initiative. This segment aims to finance the transformation of one chosen short film into a full-length Mometu Original feature, ensuring ongoing participation and ownership in its financial success.

Bryan Louzil, the President of Mometu, emphasized that while short films often draw significant audience interest, they have historically failed to generate substantial revenue for their creators. He stated, "We built the Showdown to change that equation. If audiences watch, filmmakers earn." The initiative goes beyond just financial gains; it fosters a collaborative environment among filmmakers. Participants are encouraged to engage their audiences actively during their showcase, thereby creating a supportive ecosystem wherein rising viewership propels the success of all films involved.

Louzil remarked on the importance of mutual support within the filmmaking community, stating, "This is not just about prize money; it is about building momentum." When filmmakers unite and rally their audience support, it benefits not only their individual projects but also the broader independent film landscape. As part of the evaluation process, each month's films will be assessed by panels of five judges, with the scoring process being livestreamed for transparency and accountability.
